My father did his national service in the early 30's in the Royal Berkshire and was recalled for duty in 1939 when he went into the Signals having worked for a radio company, possibly Roberts, since his original demob. He served out the war and then moved over to the printing industry after he was released. He was involved in Sicily, Burma and Malaya in his time but missed most of the European theatre. He had married Mum in 1939 and went away to war two months later. No surprise that my sister, their eldest was born in June 1946 then!! :-D

I started on my car journey with this book, printed by my Dad and brought home to me off the press. It taught me a lot and I have been known to refer to it in recent times but not for ECU issues!! :-D

When I was in my last year at school I spent the whole year as a lab assistant (They'd added a year onto the time and made no plans what to do for the kids in that year)
My science master had a collection of Shell books about cars and how to drive them which I read from cover to cover.
In the lab corner there was an Austin 7 chassis with all the running gear sectioned so you could see how it all worked.
I've never come across those Shell books since, wonder if they're still out there to be found.

Might be later versions of the ones I read Mick but I don't recognise them, got to go back to at least the early 1940s.

No Mick but that has an interesting gear driven OHC engine drawing, looks like the engine fitted to the just post war Morris 6, I worked on a couple of those, a bit of wear on the bevel pinions driving the camshaft and it became almost impossible to get the timing right.

Another of my youthful interests was trains, both real and model and these are just two of the collection of books I still have on the subject: :-D

I saw there was a "Boy's book of popular hobbies" and reminded me of one of my favourite books as a youngster the similarly titled "Boys Book of Hobbies"

Still got it of course, and was able to lay my hands on it straight away. :-D Very much on the "not chucked out" shelf.

Pardon Me while I dump a couple of card games here.

90% sure this was a game I had, which had pictures of towns from all parts of the country and where I first came across Polperro and other unusual and interesting named places.

Think I had a more modern version than this, with modern modern transport! But remember the lightning cards.

Shame to move on from the cards, those games in normal circumstances would not have been retrievable without a chance find in an antique shop, but there are specialists recording such social history, collecting and somewhere you can dig out a bit of information on the net to refresh some happy memories.

I was wrong in that I imagined Betws-y-coed was one of the selected pictured "towns" for Wales. It wasnt but I knew about that lovely little town, many many years ago in spite of never having visited it. That was the reason for looking for that British Town's card game. The website posted in the previous post is brilliant, and marked here for future delves into long almost forgotten card games.

The thread moves on, hopefully with a few more posts.

When did you last use one of these. :?:

Me, this morning repairing a garden seat as the leccy version had been left elsewhere. Surprisingly effective and economical, and quiet. Spend some time freeing it up after 30 years of slumber though.

I did have one which had a little see through clear plastic handle that unscrewed and had several "bits" in, and maybe one like your pic.
