Parking Help Unavailable Dash Message Fault

Post by garysvan »

Hello,
I have done a few searches and seem to only find answers for vans that actually have parking sensors fitted.

I have a 2010 Citroen Relay van which is one of the low loader coach built vans and doesn't have parking sensors fitted.

Every time I switch on the van I get a warning message displayed on the dash saying "parking help unavailable".

Does anyone know how to stop this message coming up?

Thanks in adavnce.

This may happen if at some point the system was operating and not is no longer working - or secondly, where somebody has inadvertently altered / configured a setting in the BSI and has changed a parameter to an option being 'present' when it is not fitted.

If you have your VIN handy I can double check whether you had any option fitted at factory (VIN is automatically masked on post submission).

Just to add...
I have a error code on my scanner stating the air bag module is faulty. I will be sending it to Crash Data to have it repaired.
I also have a few warning lights not showing up on the dashboard cluster at start up so I think that will need repairing as well.
The scanner also throws up some BSI faults so I'm wondering if any combination of them could be causing the "parking help unavailable" warning to show up?

Ok, so confirmed that the van has rear radar obstacle detection. If one of the sensors is faulty, then the whole system disables for safety reasons. So you'd need to get a professional diagnostic tool to find out which one is faulty if it is a sensor, but if you have other faults too then I think a full proper diagnostic is your best bet to find out what all the errors are.

Thanks for looking into that for me.
The van doesn't have any parking sensors.
It's a chassis van with a Luton style low loader body on it, not a normal panel van.
I live in Essex are you aware of anyone who could do the diagnostics for me as I've been using a snap on scanner and I'm struggling to do some tests with it. I also want to avoid main dealer prices if possible.
Thanks Gary.

According to your VIN it was fitted at factory with rear parking sensors. So if these have been removed / modified / disabled, as a result of coachbuilding work or body modification, that is likely where you issue is. I suspect the option for the parking assistance system was not disabled in the BSI after removing them. So the BSI may a) be getting a signal from the Parking Assistance ECU saying the sensors are missing, or b) the Parking Assistance ECU has also been butchered / removed without setting the option as not installed in the BSI, so the warning is consistently telling you it can't find anything or it's faulty.

Made of of 4 sensors (2) which you can just see along the lower bottom of the bumper.

Yes according to your VIN you have the rear parking assistance fitted with the 4 sensors in the bumper, the sound emitter at the rear and ECU also somewhere at the rear right pillar.

I've just been reading this thread as I've been getting the Parking help Unavailable message on my 65 plate Boxer. My local mechanic did a diagnostic and nothing showed.
I've checked the sensors for the clicking and even bought a spare one and removed all of the original four sensors individually to see if that would fix it - sadly not.
So I think the actual sensors are ok.
I checked and cleaned the earth connection.
I did pull the harness out from within the rear bumper/corner to see if that was damaged or unclipped and when I plugged it back in, I briefly got some reverse beeps and the warning went off the dash... for a split second. I've cleaned the connections as well as I could but still no better. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated 👍🏼

I can only suggest it may be the ECU or another issue. Have you changed anything else on the vehicle or made any mods / spliced into any wiring, taken feeds of wires or changed the head unit? Any of these can affect systems on the vehicle due to the multiplexed CAN systems used.

I had the airbag control unit replaced about 8 months ago, and that's all. No issue that relates directly to that as far as I can see. Then a few weeks ago the parking sensors worked one minute, then stopped the next with the message popping up on the dash. Briefly worked again before stopping.
Was looking at buying a pdc unit to replace mine but at £90+ I want to make sure of what the problem is and not waste the money

You really need a proper diagnostic on it before replacing anything to ascertain the issue. Generic code readers won't cut the mustard on these.
