Engine Warning Light - P1351 & P0102

Post by ukphiltr7 »

Recently I have had the engine warning light come on and a few beeps on start-up, in my 04 C3 mk1.

I have an OBDII Vehicle Fault Code Reader and the warnings that are coming up are as follows:

P1351 – IDM Input Circuit Malfunction/ Ignition Coil Control Circuit High Voltage
P0102 – MAF or VAF a circuit low input

Has anyone come across this before or knows how to resolve it? Also is it a stop driving the car until fixed or can I carry on driving for a bit until fixed?

You'll need to pop your VIN up here first (automasked on post submission) so I can relate the fault to the specific engine ECU.

I have heard that the issue can be with the glow plugs or the glow plug relay itself. I have not had chance to get the vin yet, Christmas has been too busy.

I have these two codes too.
For P0102, I guess someone has ever changed the air filter and forgot to connect the sensor cable.
For P1351, I ever saw an video on youtube says it's glow plug issue.

For P0102 it sounds like this would be a quick job with the air filter sensor cable connected again.
With the P1351 code, I hear that it is not worth changing as the glow plugs can break easy and if that is the case you are in trouble. The good thing is that this is not an MOT failure.

This means the air flow measured is below the minimum allowed. I'll be able to put up more info once I have the VIN as the fault codes are specific to the engine / Engine ECUs fitted.

Yesterday, I watched a YouTube video on the air flow sensor. It looks easy enough to change and you can get some on ebaly for £40. I took the connector out and then cleaned it up and plugged it back in. I then cleared down the errors and it did not come back, only had the 1 for P1351. I thought I had fixed it, but after a few engine restarts it came back. So this weekend I will check it is working.

I took the car to a local car electrical specialist an his machine said - Signal short circuited to earth (Min air flow) Permanent fault.

And

Preheat never (missing text) circuit relay supplied and plugs Permanent fault.

You can ignore the P1351 for now - it's the common glow plug error. These are not really needed to start the car unless in exceptionally cold freezing temperatures - they do however assist in regeneration of the particle filter (if fitted) and post heating for emissions control.

As for the MAF, beware of cheap parts, always get a decent branded one and never touch the wire element inside as they are extremely sensitive.

How do the sayings go? "Buy cheap, buy twice", "If it seems too good to be true...". If you can get OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts (even if they are not from a dealership) you should seriously consider getting them, as they should be up to the Manufacturer standards.

Well what a strange day working on the car. I looked for the glow plugs and they were not easy to see and test, so I looked at the MAF sensor. I unplugged the sensor and cleared down the errors. After a bit of starting and running only the P1351 error came back with no engine management light. Plugged the sensor back in and run her and the P0102 error (and the P1351) codes came back, with the eml.

So it looks like the P0102 error code is giving the eml and if I get that fixed she will go through the MOT.

Looking to replace the MAF sensor but I see on EuroCarPart they are asking a packet, may be ebay then (not cheap, just reasonable  ).

I would avoid Euro Car Parts. While some people have found they are OK, others have horror stories to tell. They have earned the nickname "Euro Crap Parts". I have no association with them, but you might want to take a look at GSF (and, if you sign up for their newsletter, you will get discount codes that can give a large discount on certain items).

I have just looked on the GSF website (selecting a Citroen C3, 2004, 1.4HDi, hatchback, 50HP), and the air mass sensors (with a 45% discount for both units) are £107 for a Bremi unit, and £152 for a Siemens unit. Those will be new parts.

If you go onto the GSF website you can enter the vehicle registration, to help get the right parts. As I said, if you sign up for their newsletter, you can get decent discounts (although they may not be the right one at the time you need a certain parts, so they may be doing a discount on braking items when you actually want to get filters).
