Generally speaking, XL rated tyres have two sidewall plies, not one. So: other things being equal, one will get a harsher ride but also greater turn-in responsiveness.

Just want to share if someone find it useful... I put some 225/60/16 Kleber Krisalp on my Tourer. Fantastic M+S rubber for the money. It suits Hydractive 3+ superb. Tested a lot of tires in the past, non of them so comfy but still plenty of grip in all conditions. The only downside is that they can get noisy on wet old shiny tarmac. Beside that

Concerning XL tyres: usually these have two sidewall plies, not the usual one. So: yes, a harsher ride other things being equal.
A merit of these two plies is sharper response to steering inputs.
