C5 clutch or cylinder?

Post by pasalima »

Hi All,
2 weeks ago my clutch pedal dropped a few inches & I assumed that it was something like the cable slipping.
Then last week I couldn’t get it into gear, which prompted me to think it might be a cylinder gone. I’m curious to know if this is a common occurrence & if the cylinder is external, or internal. (In other words, will I have to replace the clutch as well?)

Anyway, much obliged for any light that can be shed on the situation.
Cheers,
Paul

Stick up the VIN and we can check the clutch fitted. Citroen mostly use external slaves, but there are exceptions! How many miles (km in your case I guess!) has it done? PSA clutches like to eat the release bearing at 80-100k miles....

You have this clutch setup:

... and the slave is remote by the looks of it:

Thanks Richard,
It looks like Marc’s beaten me to it. (Thanks Marc)
There’s about 100k miles up on it now. When it happened, I raised / lowered the suspension & pumped the brake pedal repeatedly & was able to engage 1st & 2nd in order to limp home. That’s what makes me think it might be just a cylinder.

My quandary: If it’s an external cylinder, my local mechanic (non Citroen) could probably handle the replacement.
However, if it’s an internal slave, I would also replace the clutch as well. I’m just wondering if this is a nightmare for a non Citroen mechanic. If so, I would have it towed to a Citroen dealer.
There lies my dilemma.
Cheers,
Paul

May be worth a call to your local dealer first, as I know they offer clutch replacements from £399 (UK) all in. What is essential is that the correct alignment / centring tool is used otherwise this will lead to ill-fitting and issues....
