207 1.6 hdi strong fume smell

We have had a 2009 1. 6 16v hdi 207 now for just over 5 years. It's a non dpf 90bhp setup and all original at 191k. However it's always a very strong fume smell... From the exhaust outlet.. I know there's a hole in the bottom pipe where it curves under the egnine.. But tail pipe fumes are also very strong.. It's on its second set of lower milage injectors.. But still the same.

Serviced. Every 12k. But just wonderd if anyone knew why it ls fumes smell so strong.

if its blowing at the small hole in the downpipe that wont be helping

is the turbo boosting properly? if there is a boost leak it will run rich and the exhaust will smell strongly of diesel fumes as a result

Oh there's plenty of go.. Its never been down on power. The smell is strong and it sort of stings the eyes a tiny bit..
It's not a fuel smell it's a soot smell. Maybe the inlet is really chocking with carbon.. I've NEVER had it apart to do anything.. Apart from injector swap and routine servicing..

Prehaps an inlet strip down and observe how she looks.

Further info.. The mpg is great averages around 60mpg. As said no dpf.. And no dmf either. I can understand the small hole in exhaust letting the smell into the car. But why so strong at the tail pipe. I feel sorry for people behind in a que..

This isn't a leaking Injector seal smell.. Its a complete combustion smell.. It stings the eyes after a while..

Anyway.. I think I'm gonna have to strip her dien. Its never been apart in 193k. The egr valve is buggered the ecu records a shirt circuit so I guess it's completely gummed up with soot and keeping the eml on

At the monent it's our only goto car so can't dismantle it to look at..

I'm, assuming with it never been apart that the manifold could be we reduced in air flow.. I shall report on when I start doing it.

Be next year nuw but her mit is up in Jan..

Smell more with windows up or down or the same, if hole in exhaust and holes in bulkhead it can come in that way

Out the tail pipe... But I know there's a slit where the heat shield has worn a hole.. But it's just the general strong exhaust smell.. Its not leaking injectors.. Its pure outright tailpipe smell.. Is strong..
I've not actually been around another non dpf 1.6 hdi. But the 2.0 hdi citroens I've had and even my M reg Xm 2.1td with 262k doesn't have this strong eye stinging exhaust smell

I was having strong smells and it for me turned out to be the injector seals which im going to do, ive reseated 2 just to see what it does, there no where near as bad as they were smells and so on ,but ive got a new seal kit on the way for all 4, my fume smell was like diesel and also soot, got no smells now but working on the car today theres a couple of tiny bubbles around 3 and 4 injector so im not driving it now till the new kit arrives.

Silly idea but , cover tail pipe about a second at a time , not with bear hands use a rag ,get someone under car to see where gasses come out , then check around the under side of the car and check any footwell drain hole havnt come away.

If I smell around the injectors while idleing it's all clear there I know it's post combustion smell not injector seal smell...

I know there's common issues with injectors and seals but not on ours it's a post combustion strong fume smell..

Fuel filter ? Something is clogged or getting that way if its not smoking then filters ok, could be the turbo ? Waste gate working ok ?

Yup turbo all good. Its been properly looked after by me. I thought a new air filter would do it but it stayed the same. Don't get under boost. Or over boost. Works all well..

I just reckon then it's air flownredu toon on the inlet from egr soot recycling etc..

I'll strip it down and clean it all up when the newer car arrives..

Egr , id say its dirty and needs a clean , your notice when its done , pop some photos up of it when you take it off we can see how mucky it might be, good luck with it , keep us posted.

Egr needs dooing for mot but it was just as bad before when it worked.
