[2006] Peugeot 407 SW 2.0 HDi Cutting Out on Motorway

Post by BadIdea »

Hi,

I figured a new thread was better for the latest issues I've been experiencing.

The other day I took the car for a fairly long journey - 180-mile round trip. On the way there, the car drove brilliantly for the first 30 mins, but then started stuttering intermittently, and seemingly more often around 50 to 60 mph. When this happened, the revs would bounce up and down, and the car would judder and hesitate. This gradually got more frequent toward the end of the journey. Nevertheless, we made it to our destination.

On the way back, the first 15 mins were fine but then the juddering came back (temperature related?). We stopped at a service station for supplies and the car refused to start a few times. Eventually we got it going and 5 mins up the motorway at around 60 mph, the car juddered, the revs dropped, but this time did not bounce back, eventually rolling to a stop in the hard shoulder. It then refused to start at all.

By the time we got recovered (over an hour later), the rescue driver turned the key and the engine fired  We got transported back anyway as I didn't trust it would get us home.

Anyway, I borrowed a laptop and ran Diagbox today for the following report:

If anyone could help with the above, it would be massively appreciated. I feel like it's probably just a sensor or something that needs changing, and that it's temperature related, given that it got worse over time, then seemed fine after sitting for a while.

I almost forgot - my mrs took a video of what the revs were doing. You can see on the dash that we were cruising in 5th (AM6 auto 'box):

There's lots of faults in there, but also lots of conflicting info - and much seems to be associated with low voltage so may be historical; you really need to clear them all out and see what comes back. There's one related to the throttle position sensor, and another to the turbo pressure - I would be looking to see these on live data to see what they are doing.

Thanks. It's a shame there are no date and time stamps associated with the faults. I did have a flat battery a couple of weeks ago, so perhaps that's what the voltage ones are about?

Is there an option in Diagbox for live data?

How old is the battery? It is known that failing batteries can cause all sorts of weird glitches in PSA vehicles (although I have not heard of them happening while the car is running).

A flat battery would certainly lead to many of those, particularly if you tried to crank it.

Absolutely you can see live data in Diagbox, run the global scan, then double click on the engine ECU, then select the parameters (I think!) Option. There will be different sub options for various elements of the engine.

2018 according to the sticker. I thought the cold weather had killed it, but I noticed the lights were in the middle position, so maybe my mrs had left them on and that's what drained it (is it possible to leave the lights on with these?). Anyway, it seems fine after charging it over a day or so, but perhaps I'll take it into Kwik Fit for a free check.

Okay, thanks. Is the idea to monitor while driving it until it starts playing up? Can the data be recorded, or does it have to be checked there and then?

I'll probably have to get a different laptop as this one only last about a half hour on its battery!

I was finally able to get a laptop configured to read the codes again and this time recorded some data while taking it for a drive. First, the faults:

The two under HDI_SID803A seem to persist after clearing them. Could they be related to what I'm experiencing?

The car did also misbehave slightly in the second leg of my 10 km test drive, stuttering slightly as it did on the motorway (nowhere near as bad though), and each time accompanied by the climate system fans slowing/cutting out when it happened. It didn't die on me, however, and got me back home without any drama. I've no idea how useful the data I recorded is, but I've "printed" it to a PDF and uploaded it to the URL below:

Please help. This car is driving me crazy!

Correct me if im wrong , i did read ages ago somewhere on line , a worn clutch friction plate can cause the counter to act up, im not stamping a claim on that just thought id pop it down on here incase anyone else has heard of this.

I wish that were the case with this one - at least I'd know what needs doing then! I should have put in the title though that it's an auto box (AM6).

I've got some replacement bulbs for the rear fogs. I'm almost kinda hoping that replacing them doesn't remove the related fault, because then I know I'm probably looking at an earthing problem.

Have you checked that it is not a blocked fuel tank breather causing a vacuum in the tank?

I haven't - is that something you'd expect to correlate with temperature/running time?

I replaced the rear left fog today. Of course I managed to snap every clip holding the trim onto the tailgate - I feel like they're designed to do this. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), the light just worked afterwards and the related fault disappeared.

I did note that one of the wires in the tailgate looked scorched and cracked, which probably explains the "boot fuse box: Boot light control fault". I'll have to chop the damaged section out and replace it with new, but whether it is causing other issues, I don't yet know.

Image

So anyway, I've got a few questions:
  • Does the ECU cooling fault refer to the fan in front of the radiator/intercooler? (P0495 - it's still showing)
  • Should that fan spin at all when the engine is first started? Or just when the system heats up?
  • Is water ingress a common problem on the 407 SW? I don't know if it's just that it was cold, but the boot seemed to be damp.
Thanks
