2008 c5 handbrake adjustment

Post by al6600 »

Hi, I tried searching the Internet and on here, I recently replaced my rear discs and pads and also one caliper. After doing this my handbrake was not holding the car and after much searching the only thing I could find was a small paragraph saying "push the pin with the spring and the yellow end to re set the handbrake cable"
So I did and it went so tight it locked the wheels up and I had to disconnect the cable from one caliper so I could get home. Now its has come disconnected from under the console too which is going to be enough of a problem do to Limited access but the cable coming from the handbrake isn't going to reach. Does anyone know how to slacken the cable off, it doesnt have the usual nuts, the cables just hook on to the splitter plate

What C5 is this? For 2008 I would expect it to be a MK III (X7) - or do you have a MK II late registered model?

And is this the electronic handbrake or manual - better still, pop your VIN (automasked on post submission) up to save me asking questions all the time.

Ok, a manual handbrake on a system without hydraulic suspension.

Check
Raise and support the vehicle, with the rear wheels hanging free.
Check that pad friction begins to occur from the first notch.
Check that the normal travel of use does not exceed 4 notches.

If the checks are not correct:
  • Check that all the cables are routed correctly (Parking brake)
  • Check that the cables are not constrained (incorrect hooking of inner or outer cables, incorrect adjustment)
  • Check that all the parking brake control components slide or move freely
  • Adjust the parking brake
Adjustment
Raise and support the vehicle, with the rear wheels hanging free.

CAUTION: The main brake circuit must be bled.
X7 Manual brake.PNG
Unclip the handbrake lever gaiter (1).
Position the handbrake lever at rest.
Action the integrated automatic adjustment unlocking button (2).
Depress the brake pedal several times.
Pull the parking brake lever on normally about ten times.
Position the handbrake lever at rest.
Action the integrated automatic adjustment unlocking button (2).
Check that the normal travel of use does not exceed 4 notches.
Check the effectiveness of the handbrake.
Check that the handbrake warning light comes on from the 1st notch of the total travel of the lever.
With the handbrake released, check that the wheels can be turned freely by hand.
Refit the handbrake lever gaiter (1).
