Error "please insert upgrade cd"

Post by davoxx »

My C5 X7 suddenly showed this error. It was working no problem the day before. Got in the car and now I see this.

What would have triggered it and how do I fix it?
why?

I think you have the RT4 from memory. This means that some file corruption has probably taken place and it needs the Firmware CD inserted to try and find the info it needs or to replace the damaged / missing files.

If you have your Firmware system CD, insert it and switch the engine on and let it locate the files.

I didn't get any cds when I bought the car secondhand. Is there a place where I can get the cd?
Do I need any keys to activate?

Thanks for you help.

Ok, so the issue will be that we don't know what firmware version is on the car already. Do you have any function at all? I.e. if you go into the setup menu can you see any options? or is it totally not displaying anything except the message?

That is typically shown when a firmware upgrade has been started but not completed. Have you attempted to update the firmware yourself recently?

no. I changed the audio balance. that's it. started the car the next day, didn't hear any sound and looked at the screen to see that.

So it's probably got some file corruption then, triggered by accessing some less used files when you went into the audio settings. These have a hard drive in them, which are extremely rare to get hold off as they are automotive grade and need to be IDE drives, not SATA as they are not compatible.

But before going there, I think you need to try inserting a firmware CD and trying that. What I can't tell you is if you used a firmware version higher than is currently installed on the system, whether that will accept it and repair the files, or whether it will ask for the correct firmware version if you have an earlier firmware installed.

Failing that you could just restart the system with the latest firmware CD in and see if it will either upgrade to the later version if it already has a lower version installed - in which case that may be a solution.

Although I have the firmware available, experience has shown that burning the ISO images onto a CD is fraught with problems as these older systems need to be burned at very low speeds. So for the cost involved, I would just order up the firmware CD from Citroen. You need part number: 9679242580, which costs £8.54 including VAT. Just give them this part number. The added bonus is that you will be using a genuine CD, so that is always preferable as copies / clones won't always work.

I have the gear to burn cds at slow speed. I could have a go as it would be quicker than waiting a week to get a cd delivered.

Unless there's a chance I could make it worse.

Hi davoxx,

what happened? Did you solve the issue by inserting the software disk?
Today I got exactly the same error and I already tried inserting software version 8.31 but the system does not accept it and it eject the disk. I also tried 8.20 although I'm pretty sure I have updated to 8.31 and it did not accept it as well.

For now I downgraded with my old RT4 that I bough the car with but I would like to fix RT5 because I use the Bluetooth for handsfree.

Hi all,

The same, "Please insert upgrade CD" happened to me as well.
Message about upgrading firmware showed up on the screen from time to time, so I went to a dealer and bought CD titled RT4-RT5 CD Software 8.31. But it broken the system completely, all I have on screen is message mentioned above. In the bottom left corner I've got 2.13.

I've taken out the unit, and it is RT3ev-N3-Q2, not RT4 as dealer said
I've downloaded 3 different files from around the internet and burned them 8x but unit is spit it up after short few seconds.
- I've tried:
RT3_(VAN)_SoftWare_552-773
RT3-(CAN)-SoftWare-663-890
RT3 GREAT BRITAIN - IRELAND 2016-2017

Some RT4s are evolutions of the RT3, hence the name. Next you can't mix CAN and VAN versions of the software or you can brick the unit! It will be one or the other. RT4 units are CAN.

@Dazz. Pop your VIN up so we can see exactly what system you have for a start.

Also, 8x speed is probably a bit fast to burn. If you have the patience to run at single or double speed that will significantly reduce the chance of a misburn.

Hi guys,
Thanks for interest in my problem.
Peugeot 407 SW, 2008, VIN: VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

As I wrote earlier, those 3 RT3 CD's didn't work as they are spit out 2-3 seconds after insert.
CD from dealer (RT4-RT5) gets in and stuck in the drive, can't take it out. It will get out by itself eventually as last time.
I assume version on the unit was the same as it get out from production line - never updated.

I've tried 2 different burning software, and can set only 24x and 8x write speed for CD's. They can be properly read on the PC drive (some portable Matsushita BD RW, only one I have)

Right, so confirmed as having RT4, None of those firmware versions you quoted previously are for your vehicle.

The latest and last version of Firmware for RT4 is Version 8.31. This is the System Firmware version, nothing to do with the map version.

You can order the correct CD from Peugeot for just under £9, part 9679242580. This will guarantee you have a genuine CD from which to do the upgrade.
1) Keep the car engine running whenever you perform an upgrade.
2) Get comfortable beforehand and don't fiddle with any buttons or controls as this can interfere with the upgrade.
3) Leave it to install and be aware that the screen may reboot one or more times and re-take in the CD - so don't remove it until the process has finished. This can take over 40 minutes!

If you are still having issues, maybe your CD reader lens is dirty and not reading correctly, or the internal HDD is failing.
