Most towns our way usually only had two cinemas, Petts wood only had one which is now a supermarket. Bromley had two. My aunt who lived in Bromley used to play the piano in the silent film days at one of the Leicester square theatres. She was made redundant when the talkies came in and worked as a cashier in Kennedys fish shop in Bromley. I wondered as a kid why she had a baby grand piano in her front room, didn't find out until she died and my dad inherited her autograph book signed by many of the old film stars which she got at premieres - bit of a comedown I thought.

My uncle was a master plasterer and did the fancy plastering in there, quite elaborate.
He fell off the scaffolding and bashed his head, had epilepsy after that and never worked again except for a short stint as a postman.

It is a Boyes store now.
I was looking for an electrical connector to repair a cable for my son, found one that I had bought in the Boyes store 15 years ago, never used.

It may well have been the Odeon. The piano was replaced by a theatre organ which I believe was rescued by Len Rawle and his father and was installed in his house Chorley Wood and visited by John Betjeman in 'Metroland' and I believe through that visit he was offered a job by Yamaha. When he retired he went on the organ touring circuit and we met up with him at St Austell organ club some years ago. He used to work at the same insurance company in London as my wife and remembered her!

Cast your mind back to the essential task of clothes washing, and how it was done in your formative years. The washing line has been replaced by the tumble drier (in the main).

From todays energy matters thread on the back of Mick's contribution
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 08 Oct 2021, 08:51 Maybe a "Remember these all our yesterdays" mid 20th Century Washing Machine theme is brewing. I'll see if I can find a video of the sort of thing I remember, Washing machine next to the sink for draining and filling, a nice little agitator, a tub full of water with Daz etc hoyed in foaming away, a seperate wringer/mangel thing and a tray at the back where the sheets etc would gloriously fold themselves as they emerged and a separate spin dryer with a life of its own. The energy saving bit was of course the clothes posts, clothes line and clothes props and wooden pegs, and an ingenious way of pegging sheets so they got the full benefit of any breeze.
Nice to see this washer....proudly proclaiming "Made in Merthyr Tydfil" yet another energy saving device, unlike many of today's washing machines it hadn't circumnavigated the globe to arrive in your home.

Ash trays, the smoking will kill you much quicker than the uranium glass.
