Nice bit of brickwork!

Former stables and garage (to former Green Dragon Hotel), and bonded vaults, now converted to shops, offices and cellar bar. c1903-4, with late C20 alterations. Architect James Farley. Bronze brick with terracotta dressings and ornament, clay tiled roof with C20 rooflights. Built as stabling to former Green Dragon Hotel, Nos 31 & 33 Maidenhead Street (qv), and follows same stylistic character.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, large blank facade, with Dutch gable facing street, tall parapet with terracotta pilasters, finials
and copings. Ground floor has brick plinth, with blank arches, terracotta band, and large terracotta panel with raised
lettering 'McMullen & Sons Ltd, Wine and Spirit Merchants. Proprietors of Bonded Vaults. Offices Mill Bridge'.
To right is recessed doorway, with C20 glazed doors, and raised surround with recessed panel above and raised
inscription 'Entrance to Vaults'. Moulded cornice at first-floor level, above which is full width terracotta panel
within raised frame with ramped top, and raised inscription 'Green Dragon Hotel. Catering for large and small parties.
Accommodation for Motorists and Cyclists. Good stabling and Motor Pit'.
Long north facade, orange brick utilitarian character, facing former Green Dragon yard - ground floor converted to shops in 1974, with C20 single storey return along eastern side of yard. First floor former stable loft with 5 wooden sash windows with glazing bars recessed with brick reveals.
INTERIOR: altered during conversion to shops and not inspected. Forms part of an important street frontage group.

Amazing to think that early motorists needed pits to fettle their motorised steeds for the next part of the journey. Have we come full circle with electric charging points?

Just noticed it went on to "Hall of the Mountain King" yes not a Wombles original composition but Edvard Grieg from Peer Gynt.

So a memorable appearance of Hall of the Mountain King and a Spitfire (Triumph) Engine, from the FCF archives.

OK, so this shouldn't be too taxing for some of the FCF faithful, although I doubt University Challenge would set such a question

Get from "Hall of the Mountain King" to Walter Gropius in 4 easy moves. :)

Well some lookies up required. If I was asked the question who is "Walter Gropius" I wouldn't know so I'll start off finding that out :-D If it was UC I would guess "Where's Wally" and probably get an exasperated No! from Paxman :-D

May be some time....

Just seen this question - Hmmm - If it helps Neil all I know is: The Hall of the Mountain King comes from Greig's setting of Ibsen's play Peer Gynt to music and Walter Gropius was a founder of the Bauhaus movement as covered in Top Gear's venture into the arts!! Other than that its the dark arts but I'm pretty tied up today so maybe this evening if you haven't cracked it by then!! :-D

Dare I suggest :
1 The hall of the mountain king leads to
2 A night on a bare mountain from Rimsky-Korsakov
which was used by Maxell in their advert "Maxell break the sound barrier which starred:
3 Pete Murphy frontman of the group Bauhaus which led to its founder:
4 Walter Gropius ?

:-D :-D
