Dashcams

Post by myglaren »

I've considered a dashcam for a while now but fortunately had no use of one.
This (and an American) review showed up and interests me, more for the reversing cam option as I find the Civic a bit of a pain to reverse.

Not available on UK Amazon but there are loads of similar ones. All over 50p so would make my budget seriously unhappy.

The inept but amusing American one.

They can't say mirror!

I've got two cheapo dash cams that work fine but I tried to upload a short bit to this forum a few days ago without any joy, need a lesson. :)

There was a reversing camera I was tempted to fit, a wireless one offered on Ebay etc. that fitted behind the rear number plate and had a screen placed wherever you fancy.

You'll need to upload your clips to YouTube first, then when it has been processed, YouTube will give you a link Eric, then just post the link in. Just make sure you make the Video publicly available when confirming the age restrictions etc.

Not bad, but might I suggest you mount the dash cam up behind the rear view mirror. That way the camera captures more of what happens on the road (and not the vehicle it is in). Most dash cams come with a long enough power cable to go around under the windscreen trim (and not across it). Mounting the camera behind the rear view mirror means that (if you cannot turn the screen off) it is not a distraction (so would not cause any Police to take a second look), and is not in the "must not obscure driver view" region of the windscreen.

I've tried it in a few places, not really bothered too much, up behind the mirror has the rain sensor dotted area which is a bit of an obstruction.
As you say there's plenty of cable to reposition it.

That lane is on the route I take many times a week but it's necessary to crawl very carefully around the bends because there's often some dolt who thinks he's on the M1 belting up or down
My old business is in the village at the bottom and during my 22 years there I collected about a dozen 'fender benders' from up there including one day a head on by a police Mini and the postman.

Another white van man t*t.

See my illustrated guide I just did with the same issue:

viewtopic.php?t=68734&hilit=navitel

Due to the wide and long sensor / camera shroud area on the windscreen, I had to reposition mine underneath the console on the windscreen to get a 180° view as you can see...

Forget the rest of the install Eric - but as you can see
Original Mounting Position A.png
Original Position Footage obscured.png
Original Mounting Original View

Can't see anything coming from the right.
Fitted B.png
Image From New Position.PNG
New Centre Mounting

Positioned Under the Shroud
Improved 180° View

Now the camera can see
left and right without obstruction.

My Civic came with a pad for mounting daschcams/satnavs on, and a dedicated USB cable, so fitting one of the mirror cams would be simple (and leave the pad for the rarely used satnav.

The rear view camera is more problematic as the ony place I can see for it would impede access to the tailgate catch.
May be possible to use the rear screen, or the towball.

:rofl2: Cracking Steve - at least you'll be able to have a guided view when hooking up the tow hitch!

That will never happen, which is why it is considered an option.
