Ditto. Many's the time that I've cursed the eco kicking in and then having to struggle against the motorised struts to get them to disengage.
Slightly push up then down. This way the clutch will instantly unlock :)

Also change your battery.

Removing is also possible. Takes about an hour or two.

This is exactly what I do but I disagree that it is instant. I find that you have move the tailgate up and down a couple of times to disengage the struts.

Oh the battery is definitely past its best as it's 7 years old. It's only the tailgate that finds it a problem, though. I can leave the car for several weeks and there's enough grunt to start the car without a problem. It's only the tailgate that's so sniffy about the battery and it just wouldn't matter with a manual tailgate.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.
