Peugeot 2008 1.6HDI Nox Sensor Problem

Post by bradgoose »

Hi All,

I’m looking for advice regarding a NOx sensor problem on my Peugeot 2008 Gt Line Blue Hdi S/S.
The car was first registered in May (UK) 2016 and has covered 53K miles.

There is some history to this and I’ll try to keep it short...

I’ve owned it for approx 18 months and drive less than 5,000 miles per year.
When I bought it, the dealer performed a service though it wasn’t due for around another 4K miles - they didn’t reset the service counter and as a result, later down the line, the service light illuminated before it was actually due so I continued to use the car with the intention to have it serviced at the 12 month interval.
After around a month, the UREA and Engine Warning light illuminated and I took it to a local diesel specialist who carried out a diagnostic and informed me that it needs a new NOx sensor and was quoted £700 which included £100 for the diagnostic.

The fault codes are:
U029D 87 - communication fault with the deNOx system
P2200 87 - NOx sensor component detected not communicating on the emission control network
P3057 00- particle filter estimated number of particles incorrect.
All codes are permanent.

In short, I cannot afford the cost and this will be the second major repair since I’ve owned it - the first one happened shortly after buying it which turned out to be a replacement injector and a lot of fault finding by the main dealer who back charged the place where I bought it, as it was under warranty, to the tune of £1000.

Through a little research, I understand that this problem can be fixed at home.
I’d be very grateful if someone who is familiar with this could answer some questions:

Where is best to buy the part?
There are lots on eBay but can someone recommend a particular seller with genuine Peugeot parts?

Which software diagnostic tool is the best for this job?
My research has led me to understand that because my car is 2016 onwards plate, the software needs to communicate with the Peugeot servers which starts to get complicated and expensive....(related to Diagbox 9.68)

Could this all possibly be a software problem related to the car being driven with the service light illuminated for about a month or so over approx 500 miles. (The car has since had a full service)

Thank you kindly for any advice that you can offer.

Two things:

1) DPF: The service intervals are certainly used for the Diesel Particle filter additive top up warnings by estimating the Eolys additive fluid remaining (the Eolys additive is not physically measured) against the miles remaining until your next scheduled service (based on the maintenance counter). If it doesn't think you will have enough DPF additive until your next scheduled service it will put the additive top up warning on.

2) SCR System (Adblue): The Adblue tank has a physical gauge to measure the amount of Adblue in the tank, so this should generate warnings based on actual Adblue levels and should have no need of the service counter interval.

The maintenance counter can be reset by you anytime you have your service done - it's in your manual for future ref.

Depending on your exact model, (will need your VIN to determine this) but for a Peugeot 2008, a NOx sensor is retailing at Peugeot for £324.36 inc VAT, excluding fitting of course. Peugeot generally charge £60 for a diagnostic.

So I can't see £300 labour to fit a NOx sensor as justified! - assuming it is this of course.

Hi GiveMeABreak,

Nice name 😁

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I was told by the independent diesel specialist that the particle filter code problem would be solved by forcing the car to carry out a DPF regen through the diagnostic software after fitting a replacement NOx sensor.

With regard to the NOx sensor replacement - do you know if these can be purchased directly from Peugeot?
When looking online for the part, I came across Arnold Clarke Parts division for around £300 but I am not certain that it is a genuine Peugeot part - I do however know that it will be brand new though so wether having a genuine part opposed to non genuine will have any sort of impact?

There are a number of sellers on eBay offering “genuine Peugeot NOx sensors” for around £250 and they mostly have good feedback ratings. Would you recommend this route?

I am handy and the removal and refitting of the NOx sensor is within my capabilities. However, the software/diagnostic side is where I am at a loss.
Even if I replace the sensor, I am unsure of what I will need to successfully communicate with the car to reset these permanent faults - any particular help here is gladly received.

Once the sensor is replaced you need to re initialise the deNOx system with (a fairly up to date version of) diagbox or other high end diagnostics.
Just be aware about half of all the NOx sensors i have replaced needed heat to get them out then the threads re tapped afterwards.

Yess they can be bought directly from Peugeot. Staff can help you with official part numbers, but as we are charged by PSA we ask for a small Forum donation of £10 to help cover our costs. This will cover you for part number / diagram requests for up to 2 years. Details below - if this is something you would benefit from, just follow the link and pop up your VIN and I'll sort the parts numbers and prices for your specific vehicle.
A response to your question by a Forum Admin will require detailed vehicle information that requires you to have made a current contribution to the Forum.

Hi Marc,

Apologies for my delay in getting back.
Thank you for your posts - definitely very helpful.

The car is still sitting on the drive, with around 40 miles before preventative starting is enabled.
I have sourced the correct tools to carry out the sensor replacement (heat torch, removal tool, etc)

I have tried a universal Foxwell scanning diagnostic and service tool which shows live data stream back from the deNox system (1 and 2) which suggests that there is communication or that the NOx sensor is partially working. However, the tool is not able to access the service menu of the car and therefore I can’t tell the car that it has a new sensor fitted. (It hasn’t had a new sensor, I want to try going down the route of clearing the fault and forcing a DPF regeneration cycle so that I can be certain that it actually is a faulty sensor)

Had a guy turn up today to take a look with his diagnostic tool but he was unable to issue service commands to the car - he could only view the error codes and he was kind enough not to take any money.

Do you think the most current version of Diagbox will have the desired functionality?
I had read elsewhere that it’s Diagbox 9.xx that is needed but that because the car is 2016 and that the Peugeot software version on the car changed end of 2015, it may only be able to provide diagnostic codes /info and not deeper level service utilities.

Also, do you know if Peugeot sends OTA updates to their cars?
It’s another story but my wife has the same car - half a year older and they both started to suffer from the Nav/radio/settings interface go into constant crash and reboot cycle - literally overnight. That was about 5 months ago and they do it less now but it still happens.

Diagbox 9.xx will do the job no problem & is backwards compatible with much older cars.

Diagbox 9.** software will have very limited configuration capabilities in unconnected mode or even none at all - depending on model and year. Reading faults are ok and so are the general routine procedures, but any configuration of ECUs is well-known to be limited as the move is to internet-configured mode. But diagnostic fault reading is fine and is backward compatible, although it is also known that higher VCI firmware versions can affect communication with older vehicles, but downgrading the firmware temporarily can fix this.

There are no OTA updates used by PSA, they are performed in internet mode with a connection to the vehicle whilst at the dealer or authorised garage - usually with a connected VCI or via a Wireless module.

Initialising the new NOx sensor does not need a live connection. Its more of a parameter reset than a programming.

Maybe, just saying though, so the OP realises this in lieu of buying a kit on the premise that it will do everything.

Thanks guys,

I’ll look in to using a current version of Diagbox.
Can you recommend anywhere in particular to get hold of it and is it a straight forward affair to install and set up?

I’m relieved that I cycle to work and am not heavily reliant upon my car. My wife’s car is the same make and model with less than 6 months age difference....hopefully it doesn’t start misbehaving like mine has!

Regards,
Brad

Hi Brad!

Any update on this? Is it sorted now?
You did it youself or had the sensor replaced at the dealership?

Today on my DS5 2.0 BlueHDi I got just the engine light (no Urea light, however) with the message: Engine fault. Get it repaired ASAP.
Diagbox 9.91 reads De-Nox fault, so I'm exploring my options now...

Thx!

Hi,

Unfortunately not - I’ve had a few other non related issues to deal with.

Im stuck at the moment as I haven’t got Diagbox and am not sure what I need with respect to the hardware and software.
I’d be grateful if you could help me out with Diagbox in terms of where best to get it and what I would need to run it on.

As for the hardware; you need Lexia cable (full chip, Revision C) and of course a laptop to install the software on.
PMd you the instructions to Diagbox 9.91. Only requirement is that you have any Win 64bit version, min. 20GB of free space on your drive (preferably SSD) and 4GB of RAM...
