Xenon headlights

Post by Mark H »

Hi I have a 18 plate 8 seater Spacetourer Van, I have recently swapped the standard headlight units out for genuine Citroen xenon units, they worked for about five minutes then flashed three times then went off , I switched the engine off and restarted the vehicle, nothing I switched off disconnected the battery and left it for five minutes reconnected the battery and they worked again but the spanner came up in the dash telling me a service was needed in 1500 miles I turned the ignition off . Came out the morning after fitting to find that the headlights only came on for a minute and the spanner warning popped up again . I assumed it would just be a software issue and it would just need the ECU to be updated so the van knew that the headlights were different from factory fitted. I had it booked in for an MOT with the Citroen dealership so I phoned them explained the situation they said the same maybe just needs an update to software. So they were having problems with their software and couldn’t update mind so it failed it’s MOT and now the service manager is telling me that it might not even be compatible with my vehicle yet I said to him other vehicles come from the factory with them fitted and the unit is complete with the balancing unit built in and if you disconnect the battery they work so it’s a software issue!!! Has anyone else fitted the xenon units to their vehicle and what did you do to resolve the issues I’m having thanks

There are 2 variations of Discharge lights on these - maybe you fitted the wrong ones for the build date and the other thing could be the electronic architecture on your vehicle - again there are 2 types - a Full electronic architecture and an Intermediate version - each different depending on the options and equipment fitted - so I suspect this will be likely along with proper configuration of the BSI.

The BSI is the main 'Brain' on the vehicle. It sends, receives and coordinates data from all the other ECUs (Electronic Control Units) on the vehicle. It is responsible for making sure everything is working properly. It also stores the vehicle configuration and all the fitted options and equipment. All the ECUs have to be compatible with the correct electrical architecture used on the vehicle and of course the BSI has to be able to support all the equipment. I suspect, but can't be 100% certain that your BSI may not support the type of headlights you have installed.

Pop your VIN up (Automasked on post submission) and I'll see which BSI / Electrical Architecture you have.

But I would avoid fitting anything to the vehicle not approved, or compatible as you can void your warranty - you have an '18 plate, so not sure what, if any warranty you have remaining. For passenger cars it's usually 3 years.

Yes, I understand that, but there are 2 versions of Halogen and 2 versions of Discharge headlamps available for this vehicle - each depending on the build date of the vehicle.

I can’t send the vin number as I’ve left the van with the dealership to see if they can get their software machine back up and running as it kept crashing today

Ok, so that would be helpful when you have it, along with the Citroen part number of the headlamps you bought.

I can get the VIN from the registration if you have that.
The issue im thinking here is that xenon lamps need to self level, to do this they need to have body height sensors on each axle. This vehicle wont have them so this may be why they are shutting down?
If this was a C5 for example then they already have body height sensors on each axle for the self levelling suspension so the lights can also make use of them.

I suspected this might also be the issue, but I can't see any height sensors anywhere on the K0 models.
