Help! ESP / HandBrake / Parking Brake Fault U1313 (Will not Start) with Lexia/Diagbox fault report
Citroen C4 Picaso 2011 1.6HD1 Auto
VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
U1313 Fault: absence of communication with the ESP ECU
P0500 Intersystems CAN. Fault characterisation Speed information wrong or absent
Car has been unused for months and will not start.
My Lexia/Diagbox says it has found faults but I need help deciphering it please.
Error on Screen "STOP - Braking System Faulty"
It think(?) it has sometimes briefly stated Handbrake Fault but not at the moment.
When I turn the Key to Start/Crank I just get 1 beep.
When I open the door to get out there are a series of beeps.
Warning Lamps on - STOP, SERVICE, P in triangle (Parking Brake Fault) and P Auto Off ( Automatic Parking Brake functions are off)
I am also aware that the issue may be something other that the actual parking brake as I have read that other problems such as poor battery, engine bay fusebox and corroded engine bay wiring and faulty ABS conector can also cause similar issues so I am not sure where to start.
More Info -
The handbrake is physically off and I can move the car by pushing it.
When I pull on the handbrake switch, I can here the handbrake motor trying to apply the handrake but then it sounds like it 'Rewinds' when I release the switch and so doesn't 'engage/lock'.
Sometimes the Parking brake does 'engage' OK, but fault message and warning lights stay on and the engine will still not start.
I am pretty sure (?) that I had the same physical problem with handbrake not engaging/releasing months ago but i was able to start and drive the car at that time so I don't know if it is the handbrake problem that is preventing the car from starting.
MOT is due on Wednesday

The first thing I suggest you do is get the battery fully charged and make sure you follow the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure exactly to prevent electrical issues on reconnection. These systems require a certain voltage to operate and the non-use of the vehicle can result in anomalous behaviour.
try that first as it won't cost you anything other than the electricity

Hi Marc,
I was kinda' hoping you would reply so thanks.
I have got some doubts over the battery but can't move the car to get it checked. I have fully recharged it with a good battery charger that says it is ok and also connected another battery with jump leads at the same time.
I will try the BSI reset in the morning
Thanks, Gary

Re: Help! ESP / HandBrake / Parking Brake Fault U1313 (Will not Start) with Lexia/Diagbox fault report
Morning,
Took the battery to be tested and it passed as good. It is only just over 2 years old but was left discharged for weeks but doesn't seem to have affected it.
Discovered that the electric windows (and wipers) are not working (fuses OK) so hard to follow the BSI reset procedure exactly.
Did it with a person sitting in the car to operate ignition and sidelights when required.
[*]Will this suffice or does it need to be done with the Window down?
[*]Should there be a 'Bong' when the sidelights were switched on?
If the BSI reset completed successfully (even with the window up) my non-starting / braking system fault remains.
Where do I go next?
I was going to check loom wiring for corrosion and then maybe strip/check handbrake assembly?
Thanks in advance, Gary

Leaving the window open is not part of the reset as detailed in the BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure - it is there for emergency purposes in case you need to get into the vehicle in a hurry when the battery is disconnected.
The non-opening of the doors or operating any equipment where stated is essential though, otherwise the vehicle networks will not go to sleep. If you do need to have the door open to get into and out of the vehicle (especially in the case where the battery may be stowed behind the passenger seat as on a Xsara Picasso) during the procedure, you should manually close the door latch with a screwdriver to fool the BSI into thinking the door is shut. Just remember to unlatch it later before you slam the door shut after the procedure is complete!
Incidentally, can you recheck your VIN as you have left out a digit / character somewhere in the 8 - you only have 16 and it should be 17 alphanumeric.

Re: Help! ESP / HandBrake / Parking Brake Fault U1313 (Will not Start) with Lexia/Diagbox fault report
Afternoon,
I have performed another BSI reset using your Door Latch workaround but no effect on my faults unfortunately.
Car dash goes off about 10 seconds after turning ignition on stating 'Energy Saving mode Active'
I have checked the suspect area of the wiring loom for corrosion/breakages but it all looks in excellent condition (attached)

Sorry... the VIN should have an additional '1' at the end

Have a look at this video - these have notoriously bad wiring issues. It may help you:

Very interesting, I think I saw that a few weeks ago which led me to investigate the wiring in that area but couldn't remember where I had seen it so Thanks!!
I will try some further investigation when the rain goes off.

No worries - there should be a link in this video to his original video too. I've seen wiring breaks in this loom many times - sometimes hidden deep inside the bundle - they are just too heavy for the poor quality wiring and combined with the stress and vibration from driving, this causes additional tension on individual wires and the inevitable breaks to occur.

Hopefully not, but 'gently does it' when handling these when investigating comes to mind. But as he says, check the wiring back from that fuse to eliminate that as a cause.

I have the same problem in my citroen. Did you find the causes of the failure?
