The brownie points are yours, Mick and Neil.
Only two tappings were needed: twice for the A, four times for the 4.
All the others could be dialled, as they were some of the digits that could be dialled without payment anyway (eg 100, 192, 999...).
Allegedly.

As I remember it. and it is easy enough to research, the practice was finally eradicated by the introduction of the STD coin boxes which were connected via CFC (Coin and Fee Checking) relay sets. Later on the introduction of mf2 ( multi frequency) dialling added to the security of the system. Those were the days!! :-D

This just popped up from the random memory bank today, stimulated by Steve's Tom Paxton selection on the Juke Box. (the Last thing on my mind...roughly based on "The Leaving of Liverpool")

Reminded me of the Spinners Version of Leaving of Liverpool, which featured on what I presume was a complimentary cassette to go with the cassette recorder which appeared one Christmas. :-D

I've still got one of those cassette recorders (Jones) Neil together with a load of cassettes, music and Spanish lessons.

I have one too. Used for the Spectrum.
Retrieved from the attic when the Aiwa twin cassette deck didn't work.
Neither did the one from the attic.

Mine still works, I've been using it recently to move some of the music to CDs using Audacity and a line in lead.

Me too Peter, I have about 30 odd 78's, George Formby, Massed Bands of the Royal Marines, LSO, and some odd ones, 120 ish albums and 60ish 45's. All gathering dust and possibly other unwanted characteristics in the loft!! :-D

I have pretty well the whole set of Herb Alpert records that were used as background music to Testcard 'C' in the '50s. Used to have some nice music on there.

I certainly have Teatime in Tokyo but I can't remember anything else of The Tijuana Brass in my collection, but it's possible. My George Formby collection was passed down from my Grandmother who had a crush on him!! It did cause me to have a go at the Ukelele when I were a lad but I never quite got the hang of it so graduated to the guitar. Never became very good on that either but I still enjoy messing about with it to this day!! :-D

Loads of them, and a Sonab turntable bought in 1970 to play them on.

Don't remember anything as modern as that, our turntables were Lenco, Garrard etc. Can't remember the names of the transcription decks. This was in the early '50s before stereo, or about the time it was starting.

In the 50’s, the BBC broadcast the first programme in stereo, left channel on the radio and right on the TV. This was a few years before stereo records were available. I remember helping my Dad to move the furniture about the get a six foot separation. How things have changed!
