New aux belt is 5mm shorter - is going to hurt anything??

Just had a new Gates serpentine aux belt and Gates tensioner fitted as the old belt was squealing a lot.

The mobile mechanic says two belts were listed - 6PK1565 and 6PK1560. He said the 1560 went on easily with no fuss/struggle and that 5mm doesn't mean much as the tensioner will cope with that, plus it'll stretch a bit.

Will that be ok? Not too tight and damage some bearings on the alternator or elsewhere? I've just driven a fair distance and it seems fine.

The one on the car was a very old Gates and that was 6PK1565 but guess that might have been a replacement too at some point.

Any thoughts. Car has the MK1 1.6 8v petrol engine with aircon - 87k miles.

There are 3 options available for your vehicle from Citroen: The belt, the belt and the roller kit, or all of the previous plus the coolant pump:

Part: 081655 is the for the OEM original equipment belt. £100.20 (item 8).
Part: 1633128380 is for a cheaper Citroen recommended belt but not original equipment. £41.18

The Belt and Roller OEM kit is no longer available from Citroen, but they do supply a cheaper version - part no: E118415 £69.46 (Item 7).

Finally the belt, roller and pump kit is part (cheaper version): 1611898280 £172.32 (Item 51).

All prices VAT inclusive for reference.

Thanks. The mechanic just said he'd get Gates parts which I know are good so I didn't worry too much.

My local Citroen dealer has never been interested when I call to order parts - lots of huffing and puffing and variously it takes an age to get any parts in at ridiculous prices.

But I don't know if 5mm shorter will do any damage?

That diagram was for the timing belt, tensioner rollers and water pump which is what I thought you wanted.

Ah that's great - thank you. I can see that 5750YE is coming up as both 1565mm and 1560mm length depending on the manufacturer - so my new one might be fine after all (Gates 1560mm).

Your correct one is actually 1564 listed against part number 5750YE, now that we are on the same page

re: those belt numbers... 4PK1640, eg, just means a ribbed belt, with 4 peaks, and length 1640mm.
The numbering system is used across many makes of belt.

Belt manufacturers often rationalise their large ranges by merging lengths only a few mm apart.

Ah ok. I notice that with Gates, the belt length changes from 12/2001 onwards to the shorter one that I've got now. (My car is early 2001).

I wonder if the longer one was prone to slipping or Citroen changed something like a pulley/tensioner wheel diameter?
