If you ever darken the doors of Forest Green in Surrey you may come across this.

Marvellous, Neil, 5 points duly awarded, which must take your points tally for this month to at least - Oooooh! 5 points :)

Most people woul associate a Scheduling with something like Stonehenge, or a mound of neolithic soil in a field, or a Roman khazi, so - from my biased point of view - I find it pleasing that they Scheduled something so obscure dating from the latter half of the 20th century :)

The fencepost junctions still exist up some of the smaller glens along with "buried" cables that have surfaced in the faces of banks hacked out by artics on the bends.

I guess this could be as good a time as any to show you my ceramic pair . . .
DSCF3911.JPG
I think they may have come from a fallen and abandoned telegraph pole by the roadside on the Sleat Peninsula(tor), Isle of Skye, somewhen in the '80s. They scrubbed up rather well.

I do hope my insulator, not half as shiny, still left in situ, is more than just ordinary rubber, but Gutta-percha.

In its day that would have probably been nicely populated with clicking and whirring racks, nowadays its equivalent is probably all contained in a cabinet in the corner of the building. The only bit of electro-mechanical equipment left in there will be the kettle

When we moved here in 1970 the Borough Green exchange we left in Kent was still manual even though our phone had been fitted with a dial. It was useful though if you didn't know the number of somewhere local they would put you through anyway, we also new one or two of the operators and they would tell you 'she isn't in today gone shopping'

When we arrived here we had the number 'Charmouth 556' but the exchange was automatic as were all the Axminster group.

I used to be able to ring my GF in Greenford (WAXlow 4100) from a public call box for free.
Any guesses how?

Nope. No operator involved, and no personal contacts inside BT/GPO either.

In that case I suspect you were one of the 'phantom phone tappers' as we knew them. You called her by tapping out the digits on the switch hook springs? :-D
