That gem of a picture doesn't deserve to languish here on our specialist interest AA Box challenge thread Peter.
It needs honouring on Picture of the Day (which it is!).

I can put it on there as well if you like Neil although there's not much of today left.

Jim

Your dad would probably have known about the restricted engines then. We had a friend in Lairg N Scotland who ran the local TV shop, he covered the whole of Sutherland about 6000 square miles, he only covered certain areas on certain days so if he had bring a set in for repair they wouldn't normally have got it back until the next week, so he would put it on the post bus and the customer would collect at the other end. I could tell you a lot of tales about Malcolm and some of the jobs he did, but I won't at the moment.

Shove it up tomorrow then Peter. The van, the work you did on it, the two-tone paint job, the signwriting..it is just superb in my eyes. :-D

I've done my comment on it here Peter so leave it up for others to see/comment on POTD. The rural scene and the Farina two tone sticking its rear out just conjures up an idyllic feeling. Not sure if that is your own home or a customer visit.

That's our house Neil, lived here for 51 years this year. Our nearest neighbour is the farm, we have a forest at the top of the garden and a 5 acre field to the west which contains the well from which we get out water. There's a story behind the Oxford estate as well, but I wont go into it now. It was the car we moved here with in 1970 - or at least one of them.

He did indeed and used to complain about it regularly... He knew how to get round it too but to have been found tampering with a GPO vehicle would have been a capital offence in those days...

Peter, I'd love to hear them at some time and I'm sure the forum as a whole would too :D Methinks you need a dedicated thread for your memoirs ;)

I have discovered this box in a totally unexpected location, thereby nullifying the information given in and around this post:

I spotted that on a quick run through the Matthewsons sale list last night. A conversation piece but not the original.
https://cadw.gov.wales/about-us/news/co ... ephone-box

Thanks to Mr Bell, who alerted Wales’s heritage body to the third unlisted box in January this year (Box 161 Nantyffin), all three of the AA telephone boxes in Wales are now protected by Cadw as Grade II listed buildings — with box 289 located in Devil’s Bridge, Ceredigion, and box 580 on the Llŷn Peninsula.
Interesting additional info I didnt know from the cadw story...
Built by disabled war veterans at Enham Industries in Hampshire, these numbered boxes were a common sight on the 1950s roadside. They would have contained fire extinguishers, road maps and a telephone to summon help in the event of a breakdown
If anyone is planning a staycation this summer and doesn't know much about Wales the 3 AA Box tour would cover a fair bit of the Country :-D

In terms of conversation, I was surprised to see a Tele 706 Red inside. I would have expected a Tele 332 in black but maybe someone who actually used a box could advise? As my father did not have a car at all I never had the chance to peek inside one!! :-D

I wouldnt recognise a tele 332 or a Tele 706 if I tripped over them. This restored box has a Yellow phone holder thing but it may have been "modernised".

Sure there are pics of older black ones lying about somewhere :-D

I'm sure you would recognise both, just not aware of the BT names for them, and why should you be? :-D

Eventually the phones in the boxes were replaced with ones with preset numbers to dial, usually the AA, RAC and 999.

When I was a AA patrolman in the late sixties and beginning of the seventies all boxes had to be cleaned daily
