hi Kenny, many thanks, will try and look again tomorrow. the fact is the thick white wire is a direct link between grey plug (pin 2) and solenoid. and I can get the car to start remotely by powering this wire. I will look at all numbers tomorrow. I did wonder what the other 3 wires in the 5 way grey plug did. I must have power to the motor from battery, as the car starts fine when I power the solenoid.

yes 160 auto, ordered a second hand fuse board as well, as I am certain that is where my problem is.. :)

I get some interesting reactions when I start it, with no one inside, on a garage forecourt ! :rofl2: I did another first today, it was so empty on fuel that the range went to --- ! was previously 15 miles but the 1 in 5 outside home did for that .

I wouldn't worry too much about wire numbers as long as you can follow the wiring.

When I tried to get a 2nd fuse box, i found they didn't know the difference between makes, models and engines. The PSF1 fuse box used across the range.

My original one is still here but I eventually changed it for new.

I never did get to the bottom of the problem with my wiring relating to the suspension system.

no change chaps with the other fuse board.. it is very slightly different, it's an 01 and mine an 02. but all fuses that are used are present in both, car runs fine, just nothing on the starter.

to sum up, I get a relay click in the PS footwell, and a click in the engine bay fuseboard, but no starter motor.. I don't know where to investigate next.. the glove box is off now and I may get on with another vehicle..

If I power pin 2 (it was wire 100! the code was further down the cable) the starter runs and the car starts.

OK heres the checks i would do next.
I know you can hear a relay clicking when you turn the key to the start position but remember this could actually be a relay de energising when the key is turned to crank position as some circuits drop out on crank.
I would confirm that you have a crank feed at pin 9 of the 28 way grey connector on the BSM and at pin 6 of the 10 way white connector on the BSI. if thats ok i would check that you have good earths at pins 19 & 26 of the 28 way grey plug on the BSM.
This is all with fingers crossed that there are no more errors on the diagram.
Also have you checked all of the fuses?
Are there any other electrical issues with the car?

John,

Are you running a power feed direct from your battery to the starter solenoid ?

Is there continuity between the solenoid and PSF1 yellow plug on wire 100 ?

Is the direct battery supply BB02 going to PSF1 ?

Kenny, yes and yes to the first questions.. ;) I put the new fuseboard back in to be sure, and for some reason I couldn't start the car even with my temporary measure .. I walked away and did something else, and sure enough, it now starts perfectly on the key! chaps, I cant explain it, the new fuseboard is working, but as with most things X7 it didnt want to work straight away :)

all fuses checked, including in the car, all engine bay fuses had their legs filed, contact cleaner in the holders etc..
my technical explanation for all of this is that the mouse went to the loo on my relays, and changing the whole unit has worked, but needed an hour or two to settle into its new role :rofl2:
