C5 X7 bent(ing) jacking points

Post by marsalek »

Dear collegaues,

when changing tyres on my C5 X7 one jacking point bent. I had to use a big plummers wrench to straighten it out. When I jacked the car, I found out the jacking point bent again.
I am afraid the trolley jack creates a sideway force that bents the point. After straightening it, I took the jack from my Xantia, but that did not help :-)

I started machining a two-piece adapter that clamps into the 17mm diam. hole in the jacking point. The hole is much closer to the frame and the jack does not have that much lever action. The adapter is not finished yet, so any tips/hints are welcome!

Thank you!

Almost all of Citroen's slim vertical (sill) jacking points are not really up to the job. I suppose quite ok for factory use, and for shifting the car body along the production line, but not for lifting a full-weight car.

Straighten out with an engineering vice, lifted up on your trolley jack.
Re-protect any cracked/damaged underseal.
Do future jacking under the subframes, or solid suspension points.

There are a number of nicely compact low-profile hydraulic jacks (just 85mm at lowest) on the market now, small enough to be left in the boot.

Well they are not really designed to be lifted by trolley jacks at the lifting point!

The C5 X7 has a specific jack that is designed to go over the lip of the jacking points and for that purpose alone. If you use a trolley jack or other lifting mechanism then of course it will bend the lip.

Use one of these if you're using a trolley jack, this is just an example there are plenty of different ones on Ebay and the like.

Go for a jack pad with two slots arranged in a cross. You can make one of the cross slots wider to suit sills which have a return on the lower edge. Have a look on the net and you will see what I mean. One of mine has one wide slot normal depth and the other is deepened for large lipped sills. They are not expensive, so I have two. The second one has the normal slot deepened and the wide one standard depth.

The slotted rubber pad is a good idea. Decent tyre fitting bays will always use a pad when jacking under sill edges.

IMHO, the fragility of these so-called jacking points is a joke. They are too easily damaged. True, some slotted scissor jacks can spread the load somewhat, but expecting such thin metal to go unharmed is (likely deliberately) asking a bit much. At least a compact trolley jack allows lifting, effortlessly, using a tough subframe/axle part - assuming your boot has space enough!

If you have a bottomless wallet, there are some very light weight compact jacks made in aircraft alloy that appear at motorsport paddocks and service areas around the country. Price? well- if you have to ask you can't afford them. And the pillocks still jack their track day cars up on the sills - and I cringe!!!! Sills were never expected to carry twisting small contact car jacks. Every rally car I have ever worked on had reinforced jacking points for that very reason.
