Thanks Neil :D Given the sensitivities of the area during WW2, anti-tank blocks make a lot of sense...

Without defence, Salcey Forest would have been a great place for enemy tanks to hide in...

That article suggested that Beadnell Harbour (Northumberland} was constructed out of those blocks. Not originally for sure as it dates back to 1798.....https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/ ... ry/1233049

Thats not to say repairs didnt incorporate some of the many concrete blocks from the surrounding beaches, one for the Trivia Investigation Team Northumberland branch when they get round to it!

I managed to get out for my first Pub lunch since lockdown and found a smashing pub with a welcoming fire in Newport near Saffron Walden:

Berwick-upon-Tweed has featured a few times on this thread, and makes another appearance today.

First time yesterday we had a drive up to Halidon Hill. As well as being the site of a "mast" which you will see from the Berwick by pass on the A1 or indeed from the train crossing the border bridge, it is also the site of one of those many battles between the English and the Scots.

Today there is a small carpark, a bit of interpretation of the battle and it was by no means small scale in its brutality and in the lives lost. No coincidence that the view from that carpark is truly panoramic across the Border Lands inland up past Melrose and the Eildon hills, The Cheviots, and the Coast, and of course Berwick upon Tweed and the and the east coast mainline crossing the Border Bridge. (not that it is the border...that's an anonymous layby up the A1.)

This is the best my camera could capture of it yesterday,

That' a great view with a nice bit of railway interest in it Neil :)

I'd love to see the same vista on a brighter day...

I went somewhere closer to home today, a short visit to my special happy place :) I did take a rather circuitous route to get there, as usual!
Always good for a visit...

They do a mean coconut milk hot chocolate in the cafe :D

That alone makes it worth visiting!

Great stuff, I think you would have needed quite a few hot chocolates for cycling round our way this afternoon, damp, misty, cold. Did a little French car job documented here in my al fresco maintenance bay, which was probably why the weather was so awful :-D

Warkworth Northumberland.

You may have seen it on the TV or on a Clan Crusader Brochure from the 1970's. Castle particularly well dressed with its daffodils at the moment.

Now that we are able to make the odd journey I may have to visit some of your nominated locations and that would make a good place to start. I like castles - particularly Castle Bolton, although it is sixty years since I was last there.

My niece's husband an Aussie has a passion for castles and visited as many as he could on their trips to the UK, had a good start as the bus from Heathrow brought them to Chepstow where I picked them up. :)

That is the church/chapel in Kirkharle at which Capability Brown was baptized I assume? :)
