S2 Xantia - No lights on dashboard

Post by Rhothgar »

Also, decided to get around to fitting the silicone tubing on the return pipe for the OS Front leg today. Got into the S2 and the dashboard lights do not come alive. I am hoping it is because the battery was drained.

However, it does turn over albeit slowly. Surely the dash light would have still come on if it has enough power to turn the engine over, however slowly?

It would be nice to have one car that works.

On a positive note, the central locking is working rather nice on the S1 since I fully stripped the barrel lock.

Does anything come alive Roger or is everything on the dash dead? Does the fuel gauge move for example?

And does the tacho needle twitch when the engine is turning over?

Revisit this when the battery is good :)

Good news on the door locks :D That's one win at least ;)

Hi Jim,

The door open light is on and the battery light. Everything else is dead and the rev counter is stuck on 9000rpm ie fully clockwise!

Nothing twitches or moves. Fuel gauge - nothing moving.

You'd expect to see some movement even if the vehicle was out of fuel let's say for argument's sake.

Looks like I'll have to break out the Lexia...

I'm truly sick of the car. MOT due in 3 weeks. As you know, I got it to a driveable state at the time. Enough to move it across my mate's yard and into the MOT bay. Then when I went back a couple of months later it would not start again.

Then I had all the rigmarole when I did get it home of it just stopping one day on my brother which needed lots of diagnostic investigation.

So in all that time since the 3rd week in March, I've not driven it really and spent quite a lot of money on it with new clutch and new clutch cylinder and other accoutrements and the amount of time I have invested on it is beyond a joke really. A sane person would have scrapped it but I don't like to be beaten.

I'm sure I'll sort it within a very short time but if not it's able to be driven to the MOT in 3 weeks it's going to be offered on here for someone to trailer away and use as spares I think.

I missed the MOT extension window for an 18 month MOT by days!!!

Right now. I suspect the double relay.

The double relay only affects the engine ECU and fuel pump, it won't be responsible for your other symptoms. I would be suspecting a fault in the infamous 10AV harness

I think you said that you have the wiring diagrams, let us know if you need any.

Cheers Xantia_v6

I’m all good on diagrams.

Do you mean the 10PR loom?

Had a little time to look at the diagrams now.

The instrument panel comes off 50P/B and Pin 13 of the instrument panel is a direct feed from Fuse F12 in the Passenger Compartment BF00 Fuse Box.

I'm going to start my search there.

Pin 26 of the instrument panel comes off the ECU and appears to be the 'other' side ie earth switch (I think) for the rev counter. I may be wrong there.

One of the jobs I have to do on the car is the dashboard fix. Surely that would not stop the car from starting unless it needs some kind of signal that the speedo is working?

Laptop has some charge in now so I'll hook that up and see what it reports back.

By the way, 10PR feeds IC01 (and all the other interconnections by the looks of it) which feeds 50P/B. I suppose I could check for voltages on all the fuses in the Passenger Compartment Fusebox as that would surely rule 10PR out as far as the instrument panel is concerned. I must check IC02 also as I seem to recall I broke the clip on that.

DEEP JOY!

OK.

So Lexia is giving some temp faults which do not concern me.

However, when I come to try and erase those faults I get the message “Communication Problem” and it will not allow erasure.

I’ve checked for power to the fuses and there is none on some.

I’ve then hot-wired from the battery to F12 and all dash lights illuminate and the car starts.

So now it’s time for a nice cup of tea before trying to trace the offending wire!

Choose appropriate mug and away we go!

I need to look at the splice in 10PR under the radiator.

This is the known issue you are referring to xantia_v6.

It’s like in a ‘casket’ I think. Just sitting under the fans. Nightmare to access.

Is it best to take the radiator and intercooler out or the front bumper off I’m wondering?

Any clues would be great. I’ve started undoing all kinds of bolts and seem to be getting nowhere

All done!

Temp fix for now.

I’ve only got factory manual for S1 bumper removal. Not sure if S2 is the same protocol.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Made up that I got it sorted in a day.

No I didn’t. Something definitely to look at.

Does the fuse box have a PCB in it then?

I tried pulling the fuse box away from the dash underside and there must be a knack to it.

I think I’ve managed to pull it out before abs it was a nightmare to get back in.

Interestingly there are water marks on the steering wheel and the e dash where it must have snowed and rained in at some point!

Mine had all your symptoms bar the fuel pump not running and I wonder why as that actually feeds off the double relay...

Mine was a mk1 V6, which uses the same panel, but the circuits are arranged a little differently.

There are 2 PCBs in the fuse board, and it is the soldering of the wire links between them that fails, I think because of stress with repeated heating cycles. There is no flex to relieve the strain.

I know of at least 3 cases where this had happened.

To remove the fuse board, pull the red tab at the top to unlatch, then wiggle it out.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention again.

It makes sense now. There will be a break between F2 and F12 internally I’d bet and that’s why the fuel pump wasn’t priming even though there was 12V at the fuse!

My money’s on that.

There’s some outstanding knowledge on this forum.

Truly made up to have got it fired up again today.
