Got it largely stripped but the 3 of the 4 pins appear seized.

You dont need to put all of the pins back in, in fact you dont need to put any of the pins back in. It means it will open with any SX9 type key, no one would know the lock is blank unless there is an opportunist walking around with an SX9 key trying old Citroens.
PS you should only be able to remove the pins from the lock when it is in the rest position & the black bit fully retracted back towards the front of the lock, the position its in in the pics you posted above the pins wont come out.

It would be but I think I left my last can up at my mate’s garage.

Would you believe I actually managed to remove the black sliding actuator and used light machine oil and kept working the pins. One was an absolute ...

So it sounds as though I could rebuild just using the little V shaped spring which pulls the actuator back when the key is removed.

I might just strip the passenger door one tomorrow and use that in driver’s and have ‘keyless’ entry option on passenger side.

Someone would be less likely to think of that!

Damned lock!

I rebuilt today with pins, no worky.

Stripped the pins out, no worky.

Put some pins back in, worky.

Stripped it back down and lubricated with graphite powder, rebuilt. No worky.

And that is with the broken tab. Those tabs cannot be bent, they are actually metal in my lock not sure if the later ones are plastic perhaps?

So!

I’ve rebuilt with a spare black metal ‘carriage’ out of another lock and noticed that when the key goes in, the carriage doesn’t appear to move 3 mm. or however much it is supposed to move.

I think the issue is actually how the black cap goes back on and whether the spring needs to be wound a certain amount?

Guidance again appreciated before I crack.

Damned lock.

Every one i have done this repair to the tabs have been metal. When i say bend them we are only talking a little sqeeze 1-2mm max to stop the tip of the key going in too far, if the key goes in to far the pins dont align & the black bit wont pop out.
In the pic i put above is as far stripped down the lock would normally need to be, I wouldn’t normally remove the face cap like you have & im not sure what you mean by winding a spring?

I assume you mean the photo you posted in the other thread?

Do you nip the tabs together? I don’t want to break another. They are pretty substantial and don’t appear to bend. Not sure how you managed it.

I see your spring is fully forward. Something which obviously only occurs when the lugs are fully extended.

Did you use pliers?

Yes, sorry meant the other post.
Yes i just use normal pliers to give them a squeeze, done this plenty of times on xantias & dispatches/synergies as they share the same locks. Never broke one yet.

You just be a gentle soul and I, a Neanderthal.

Good news though.

Finally got it working with 7 pins despite getting them mixed up. It’s just a bit time consuming getting them in order.

Tell me this though.

I accept that these locks are pretty well worn. I ended up using an 1/8” ball bearing for the indent.

However, an 1:8” bearing do not fit into the two holes in the top half of the barrel.

So. As standard, do the locks rotate 360 degrees with the key inserted but not pushed home fully?

The passenger lock rotates fully so I may just blow some graphite into that to see if it eases it rather than taking it out to service.

The driver’s door now rotates fully if key is lightly inserted but if it is inserted fully then it works as it should.

Could it be some other issue that causes this and is there a solution? I’m just thinking it is there to stop someone trying to rotate the lock with a screwdriver and forcing it.

I may be wrong but I am hoping this is how it should be.

If not, so long as it works for now, it can wait for another strip down unless it’s simple fix.

Yes, correct. They do just rotate freely until key fully pushed in, and yes it's an anti-theft design feature.

Oddly they don't all do it - I just tried it on my SX wagon (SII), and the locks don't spin. Maybe it's a high-spec thing, as I know it works on VSX hatchbacks.

Congratulations on progress so far. I have changed over a lock actuator, but actually dismantling a lock seems very courageous!

Thanks for your input Armidillo.

Courageous is one word some people would use to describe me. The other is stupid!

Mine’s an SX too so I wonder if it is a spec thing.

I’m pretty sure the passenger door never did it.

Just really miffed I broke one of the tabs in each cylinder. Practice makes perfect.

One thing I did learn but too late was keep the key in the lock and use it as a former to nip the tab up if ever you find yourself dismantling your door locks.

Yes that’s normal operation. If you force it or use the wrong key it will just rotate as a security measure. When the little nibs splay out/wear over time it lets the key go in the initial part of the lock too far meaning the pins don’t line up giving the effect of using the wrong key.
There are quite a few manufacturers car door locks that do the spinning thing if you force them too.

Well! Got it all back together and because I was unaware I could remove the cylinder without taking the handle out, I ended up taking two of the rods out.

The locking, deadlocking and unlocking are working (in a fashion). Locking action is a bit stiff. It just catches a little bit a wiggle helps. Nothing I cannot live with.

The rod with the serrations on that actuates the door latch is no longer working. It’s clipped in. Does it need setting in a certain location?

Nearly there...

It’ll be one job well done.

Then I have to set about cleaning the kitchen!

UPLOADED photo to show relationship of barrel outer casing and internal gubbins should anyone else wish to service their locks. May even produce a short video for posterity.
