The army had governors on their vehicles, when we in REME serviced them we found that was the most tampered with part of the vehicle, they often broke down due to drivers fiddling with the mechanism.

Royal Mail did similar on the postmen's vans.

I suspect that if all cars were restricted there would soon be a black economy in getting around it.

To be frank that was a perfectly adequate car for the needs of most.

I recall one of the usual TV Police programs where they had found a lorry cab unit that had had the tachometer modified so it could be turned off. Several consequences of this modification was that the governor stopped working as did the speedometer and milometer. When the Police took it onto the motorway (escorted by a couple of Police cars) and opened her up (after triggering the mod) the driver was startled when, at one point, an escort car radioed that they were now travelling at 100MPH!

These days the amount of information transport managers/ management have on the driving behaviour of their employees, via telemetrics in the vehicles, and pda's carried in the course of the job etc means that evidence which can result in warnings and potential dismissal is easily gathered. No real need for those "How's my Driving Phone......." notices these days for someone who runs a fleet.

Not just speed limits being exceeded in company vehicles/ harsh braking/cornering/excessive revs/ acceleration up through the gears etc etc.

Right place for this. The categories of autonomous driving. In the UK the important legislation is this

Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018

The Secretary of State is required to produce a list of approved Automated Vehicles. Currently that list is empty, so level 3 of autonomous driving is not legal on UK roads.
Spoiler: show
1 Listing of automated vehicles by the Secretary of State
(1) The Secretary of State must prepare, and keep up to date, a list of all motor vehicles that—

(a) are in the Secretary of State’s opinion designed or adapted to be capable, in at least some circumstances or situations, of safely driving themselves, and
(b) may lawfully be used when driving themselves, in at least some circumstances or situations, on roads or other public places in Great Britain.
(2) The list may identify vehicles—
(a) by type,
(b) by reference to information recorded in a registration document issued under regulations made under section 22 of the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, or
(c) in some other way.
(3) The Secretary of State must publish the list when it is first prepared and each time it is revised.
Only 1, and 2 currently "legal" on UK Roads, 3 is on its way with Automatic Lane Keeping System (ALKS) probably this year.

If you want an antidote to Self Driving cars, try this bit of proper driving, 12 gears to select, long levers to pull, and stalks to push, large horizontal steering wheel to wrestle with, and a big two-stroke diesel needing a decent rev.

We have this in the UK "The Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018" is referenced in a wordy way in the spoiler, but for automated vehicles to be allowed on UK roads, its provisions have to be complied with. Currently level 3 autonomy is not permitted.

BBC Technology News 'Self-driving' cars to be allowed on UK roads this year
This report trails possible allowance of automatic lane keeping systems, part of a level 3 automation
The government confirmed that drivers will not be required to monitor the road or keep their hands on the wheel when the vehicle is driving itself, but the driver will need to stay alert and be able take over when requested by the system within 10 seconds.
Opinions differ but I liked these two opposite comments on the BBC article
On the one hand
I am completely bewildered by this fascination with self driving cars. If you cant be bothered driving and want the car to drive itself, sell it and take an Uber or a bus or a train.
On the other
Eventually (still decades away, though), self-driving systems will become safer than human drivers. They'll turn boring commutes into useful time to do other things. And they'll get you safely home from the pub when you've had a load to drink...

I would think that even if the vehicle is driving itself you could still be prosecuted for "Drunk in charge!" -unless of course someone is prepared to prove that the car is in charge!! :-D

Self drive vehicles

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

I didnt realise it but Gibbo pointed out that the UK has a "Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles". CCAV.
It is a joint unit of the Department for Transport and Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. Crikey we we are on the ball in the UK...

So if you want to check out the latest chapter and verse of the progress of Autonomous vehicles onto the roads of the United Kingdom here is the Governments official mouthpiece.
Their latest release..28th April 2021

Government paves the way for self-driving vehicles on UK roads
Automated Lane Keeping System technology outcome means self-driving vehicles could be used on British roads.

This is where the requirements of the "The Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018" come in. For automated vehicles to be allowed on UK roads, its provisions have to be complied with. Currently level 3 autonomy (Conditional Autonomy) and above to full autonomy at level 5 is not permitted. No vehicles as yet have been approved for the legally required list.
"(1)The Secretary of State must prepare, and keep up to date, a list of all motor vehicles that—
(a)are in the Secretary of State’s opinion designed or adapted to be capable, in at least some circumstances or situations, of safely driving themselves, and
(b)may lawfully be used when driving themselves, in at least some circumstances or situations, on roads or other public places in Great Britain.
Following a landmark call for evidence, the government has set out how vehicles fitted with Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS) technology could legally be defined as self-driving, as long as they receive GB type approval and that there is no evidence to challenge the vehicle’s ability to self-drive. So with ALKS the following conditions are likely to be applied, for autonomous use
Automated Lane Keeping Systems are a first example of self-driving technology, and will be limited to speeds of up to 37mph on motorways

How to solve a problem which doesn't need solving.

Apparently there was a problem with the TESLA Autoparc system.

Tesla has started updating its Autopark feature with its new Tesla Vision computer vision system, which now powers Autopilot and its Full Self-Driving Beta. The major problem with the previous ultrasonic sensors around the vehicle was that it limited the usefulness of the feature as it was only available when there were vehicles on each side of a specific parking spot. Recently, Tesla has been moving its Autopilot features to its vision-only system.

So with the benefit of a hacker who has activated the feature on his vehicle, we can see a very expensive car, park centrally in a parking bay with no vehicles on either side at a snail's pace. Hip hip Hooray, one of the first world's major problems has been solved :-D

:rofl2:

Well said - Mine does the same (although I have to engage forward and reverse), but I much prefer to do it myself.

Have you noticed how supermarkets are doing a 'Cadburys' these days and shaving a few inches off the parking bay widths every time they repaint them?

You can just about reverse in, but you're bu**ered if you can then get out of the doors...

The only experience that I have with it is at a Citroen rally in Wetherby and Bencowell turned up in a Genysis.

Surprisingly good ride on country lanes, then it autoparked on return and performed very well. Not as fast as an experienced human but didn't gouge adjacent cars and lined up nicely.
