I was expecting a parcel a couple of weeks ago the courier was DPD. The driver didn't bother to come probably because of my rural location he put I wasn't at home into his machine instead. I rang the next morning to say that I was at home they asked for my postcode, checked against the drivers GPS records and admitted he didn't come to my house. I kinda felt sorry for the guy I hope he didn't get into too much trouble.

I'm not sure if the speed limiters will be introduced in Ireland any time soon people driving a few miles over the limits are a good source of revenue. We have a lot of weird arbitrary speed limits here, motorways with 60 kph speed limits, etc that's where the cops go to shoot fish in barrels.

Apropos that, a couple of days ago I was awaiting an Amazon delivery due before 9pm.
I also needed to go out that day but had to sign for the package as there was a knife in it.
Looked at the tracking info and here pops up a Google map, with my location and a green dot, the Amazon van, about half a mile away.
Watched it getting closer and closer.
It was 100 yards away so went downstairs to wait.
He was ages.
When he did arrive I mentioned I had been watching his progress until he was just around the corner.

He said he had taken a while to get from there to here as he had doubled back to the shop up the road :)

Took a screenshot but not a clue where it is filed :(

Speed Limiters & Black Boxes

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Revive an old thread day

This cropped up in Car News Global and Domestic.

Its one of those things that after leaving the EU, although the change isn't due to be mandatory in the EU until May 2022, the UK will choose to follow the rules, if for no other reason than they want to sell cars to Europe.

Not new, announced in 2019

intelligent speed assistance, and data recorder in case of an accident are the measures AKA Speed Limiters and Black Boxes.

They put their slant on it back in 2019, but with a 2022 long grass implementation date, although of necessity giving the auto industry a bit of notice, the story itself goes into the long grass, and it just happens.

We could play guess the DM headline but here it is from 2019
Thing is, if you go into a showroom and select any new car now, it will have track your every move built into it. Just like your mobile phone or your computer has. My 2015 Nissan Leaf does, although I don't subscribe to Nissan Connect, so it isn't switched on.

It doesn't necessarily mean just black box recording.

Intelligent speed assistance can be active cruise control systems, and Collision Alert / Active safety braking that I now have in the Aircross. I also have the speed limit recognition and recommendation that is linked to the cruise control - so when the speed limit changes it flashes up on the HUD and I can press one of the buttons on the cruise stalk and it automatically maintains the legal speed. Curiously it's something that I now find I'm using all the time - which I never thought I would. Another change in the matter of Cruise on this vehicle - the cruise control speed now remains active when the gears are changed now - so no more having to resume it all the time after changing gear.

Apart from the SOS emergency calling system in the car, it will automatically call the emergency services in the event of an impact detected by the Airbag ECU - independently of deployment of the airbags - and provides them with geolocation data of where the car is etc. So these systems are also undoubtedly part of what that stuff rather generally refers to.

All this type of 'Big Brother' innovation is definitely going to drive me more and more into the path of converting my own MX3 or similar to electric power when I am no longer allowed to run it on petrol, assuming I live that long of course :-D . Within my lifetime I am fairly sure there will be a 'classic car' loophole of some sort which will allow me to enjoy actually driving the car myself. If not then I will definitely be better off dead!! :-D

Yes, some tech is useful but not at the expense of doing everything for you - that would be a killer. I have to turn the Lane Departure Warning off every single time I start the car, as were we are there is rarely any tarmac, yet alone any white lines :rofl2: on the roads - and it confuses the system, so I am frequently getting beeped at all the time and it's quite infuriating - so has become part of my ritual now - start car and hold in button to disable it!

What a pain!! Can you not disable it in software somewhere Marc? That's probably a dumb question but it just came out of reaction!! :-D

I'm still waiting to get a suitable laptop to run the later Diagbox 9.** software that I need, so haven't had a chance to look yet. But with closer integration of the systems, there's always the chance now that changing something on one system may affect another system and as it's under warranty I'd be reluctant at this stage to experiment Mick.

In the good old days where classic cars still had to have MOTs(!!!) you could have implemented a mileage based restriction on how many miles you could do in a classic per year and that would have probably kept the government happy that you didn't have a black box fitted in it. Implemeting any form of mileage restriction on a classic nowadays would be tricky as there'd be no annual examination of the odometer, you couldn't plumb a black box into the electrics as it could be equally easily 'unplumbed', and having a portable device that travelled with the car would be as much use as a chocolate teapot. A rough and ready form of control could be implemented by using number plate recognition, but that system would become superfluous in the end as most of the cars on the road would move over to 'black box' monitoring.

Either that, of the other ECUs will detect that the police informer has been disabled/fired/killed and go on strike (because it was part of their union and they have come out in sympathy for their 'brother').
