I sold a lot of those Maestro vans, a far better van than the Escorts of that time especially with the diesel engine.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

That was the first high speed direct injection engine by Perkins, very noisy but fantastic fuel economy, they brought a later model with two stage mechanical injection, that was much quieter. Use mostly in the Sherpa Van.
There was a race between the diesel engine manufacturers to be the first to bring out a high speed DI engine and I think Perkins won it, can't remember what they called it now.

Does the Perkins Prima ring any bells
In another wiki page on Perkins engines is this pieceIn 1986, BL collaborated with Perkins to convert the O series to run on diesel. The oil-burning versions, known as the Rover MDi or Perkins Prima, proved to be highly successful in the Maestro and Montego, and helped sustain the ailing mid-sized models into the 1990s. Perkins successfully marketed the engine under its own brand in the industrial and marine sectors.
Regards NeilPerkins BA 4.20 ( not litres just an engine number ref)
Produced as a Joint venture between Perkins, UK government and the Austin Rover Group. Based on the Austin Rover O series engine this engine had major parts produced at Longbridge by Austin Rover with final assembly by Perkins. It was entirely designed by Perkins who also sold it to external customers. It was used by Austin Rover in the Austin Maestro and by LDV Group in their 2.5-tonne van.

As with the 4.20 but turbocharged with an intercooler. Used by Austin Rover in the Montego and later the Maestro.|

That's it the 'Prima' a massive advance in diesels, there's a story involved with this engine and me. I did a number of diesel conversions using Perkins 4/99 and 4/108 engines. In the later cars a vacuum was required for the brake servo's, no vacuum pumps in those days. I devised a system with a disc like a throttle control in the air inlet, coupled to the throttle so that when you took your foot off it would close and supply vacuum to the servo unit, worked a treat.
When the Sherpa Van came out it used an almost identical system - wish I had patented it.

You've mentioned this before Peter and, unless you did these before the 1970s, you weren't first. I was told about this system on an old Land Rover by a friend who also did diesel conversions.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

I did my first one in 1959 Paul, but they didn't have power brakes then. That was a 4/99 into an E model Cresta, complete kit from Perkins. I don't feel so bad about not patenting it then , my first vacuum conversion would probably have been in the '70s. Apologies for the repetition - I'm getting old.
