The speed in which car fires can take hold has always worried me
I'm wondering if the fire was caused either by the electric air heater in these, or one of the - generally - problematic heater resistors that cause so many fires in other cars. Anyone got any thoughts ? It sounds like it was heating / aircon / under dash related, and not 'under bonnet' related.

Indeed - but I guess we'll never know now as it's burnt out.
Glad you have resolved all the Insurance issues though - that's added stress that a long protracted case can bring on that you have avoided and seem happy with the outcome. But you're still going for another Tourer?

The fire was definitely from under the dash.
I lifted the bonnet before it went into flame mode and there wasn't a hint of a problem there.
The funny thing is that after the fire was extinguished the engine started turning. The damn thing was starting up. The fireman had to disconnect the battery.
Yes, I go for the Tourer today. Remember this was the DS5 that went up in flames.

Ah, I was confused about the car from the write up - and did have to re-read some parts re the part exchange, but as it was on your Tourer thread I thought it was the Tourer that went up and it also looked a bit like the tourer from the video! In that case, no issues I'm aware of with DS5 going up in smoke.

Sorry for the jumbled message.
Now we're all on the same page I collected the Tourer at 1pm yesterday.
IT'S BLOODY FANTASTIC. a 14 plate with 23k on the clock and looks as if it's just come off the assembly line.
I couldn't be happier. It's like sitting on a hovercraft as it glides effortlessly along the road where the DS5 would have broken a few teeth jolting around on even minor surface blemishes.
Honestly I'm dead chuffed.
Why in hell Citroen thought the DS 5 was a better replacement option is beyond me. OK it has a couple more things to play with on the dashboard (when it doesn't burst into flames) and looks pretty cool, but it's a step backwards in terms of driving comfort.
The end of the hydractive suspension was a sad situation and I feel it should have been incorporated into the upper end styles of the DS range and even the new C5.
Hey ho guys, I can't wait to take it out for a decent drive with my fishing tackle in the massive boot and perhaps even some overnight camping gear. Wife allowing of course.

Do you remember the advertising campaign Citroen went with for the launch of the C5 X7 (and other models)? "Refreshingly German". Well, the German car manufacturers seem to have a fetish for granite suspension (probably due to the fact that they seem to do all of their high speed testing at the Nurburgring), to keep the car stiff through fast corners. Citroen were famous for their hydro-pneumatic suspension, which was comfortable all of the time, and stiffened when required. It is such a shame that cost prevented them from developing the Activa version to its' fullest extent.

I hadn't heard of the "activa". As far as the hydractive-3 goes, I see no reason why it couldn't have been continued without further modification. Such a shame.
I'm now looking for a replacement for the DS5 for my wife and there's no way on God's earth will I even consider Citroen's models.
OK, the less expensive ones didn't have hydractive but my experience with the McPherson strut jobs doesn't inspire me at all.
Something like a 14 plate or newer Astra perhaps though I'll need to do a canny bit of research first.
It's that size of car, auto an 4/5 door I'm looking at.
Suggestions up to £5K ?

Try looking up Citroen Xantia Activa. Properly set up and with the right tyres on could corner at stupid speeds while only leaning at 1/2 degree! It would only start to skid at 0.94 lateral G, and it STILL holds the record for the Scandinavian Moose Test, beating Porsche and McLaren (and others fast cars).

PSA apparently own Vauxhall now Mick.
The ride on the metal sprung lower spec X7's is really excellent, over the forest track that I drive on to get to the road, at low speeds it rides better than most of the hydropnumatic Citroens I have owned, that's going back to the CX. They have never given a really smooth ride over small undulations at low speed, always feel a bit jittery, as soon as you get some speed on the they are fine.
It was the ride and quietness that sold me the steel sprung C5, I saw one advertised fairly locally and asked if I could have a drive, which I did and it really blew me away. I had no real intention of buying it but the ride and noise level was almost unbelievable compared with The C Class Merc I was driving at the time, I just had to buy it. I have to say I have not driven a more comfortable modern car.
As a result of that purchase, when my wife's 406 died - she wanted one. After an intensive search I found one in Peterborough with virtually Exclusive spec, glass roof, leather, sat nav, parking sensors etc but with springs and a manual box, although it is a very nice car it doesn't ride as well as the red one. A very knowledgeable member (can't remember who, or much else for that matter) informed me that the higher spec ones are fitted with stiffer front springs, and certainly this one is, spoils the ride really, don't know why they did it. Although its got all the bells and whistles I prefer driving the red one.
