Xantia Battery Leads Specs

Post by admiral51 »

Hi all
I know there is a thread about this in the super sticky but is there anyway of finding out the original specs, locations of fixing points etc.
The Vin is in my sig but i am looking to get both leads done and just wanted to have some heads up of what to explain to the auto sparky so i do not look like a complete numpty.
I have looked through the sticky thread and would like to go for the modern upto date wire and go bigger in terms of rating just need to work out what the specs are before i start negotiating etc.

There are no 'specs' Colin apart from the length:

The battery positive cable (2) is 910mm long.
The battery negative cable (3) is 610mm long.

Is this what you wanted?

Thanks Marc
I just want to make sure i get the job done correctly so the diagram is gold dust for me so i can at least not look like a numpty and give the lengths of both.
From what i picked up in the sticky thread it is possible to run a single + lead from the battery to the starter and then individual leads from the starter to the fuse box?
As for the specs i guess all + battery leads are the same in terms of capacity, old ones were thicker but modern ones thinner but do the same thing.
I know i keep asking questions about the electrical side of things that most take for granted but in terms of how difficult i find the understanding of it i would say i understand a womans mind better :)

Chris (White exec) would be better to advise on the Xantia battery Colin as I think he's had a lot of experience in overhauling and replacing these. Click the contact bubble in the profile pane in the left and send him a PM - it should automatically copy a link to this post.

Hi Colin,

Would suggest using 25mm² stranded welding cable for both Batt+ to starter motor, and Batt− to engine/gearbox Ground, and to bodywork Ground. For that last one (Batt− to body) a smaller cable (10mm² or 16mm²) will be ok.
battery clamp cable 25mm2.jpg
This is usually 'rubber' covered, with hundreds of 0.2mm copper strands, and is very flexible.
25mm² is good for 180A continuous, and 330A+ intermittent [RS figures].
Most decent electrical wholesalers will stock it, and sell by the metre. Some motor factors too.

Battery clamps are best in brass, something like these...
Battery clamp connector pr.jpg
It's usual to take the Batt+ connection to engine bay fusebox etc directly from the Batt+ connector, rather than the starter motor. This minimises voltage drop (especially during starting) and makes any voltage-sensing a bit more stable.

For Grounding and starter motor connections, use crimp-type eye/ring connectors of the right size for the copper strands...

Crimp with a vise, and slide some sleeving/insulation over the crimped part for safety.

16mm² cable would do the job, but you're only going to do this once, so it might as well be sturdy, especially for diesel.
PSA always skimped on cable sizes, which is why originals might be more slender.
Many cheap jump-lead kits use quite spindly cables, simply because use will be very occasional, and many are built down to a price.

Thanks Chris
I do want to do it properly and the sparky i will be using is proper old school, does it right first time and has all the right kit to make up leads on site.
The info i have got now means i can talk to him with some degree of knowledge of what i want to be done.
The battery clamp makes sense now as i was trying to figure out how to make the connections when it looks like i have only 1 complete + lead at present.
As Marc kindly posted the lengths of the respective leads and the diagram showing what i shall refer to as branches going to various points it is finally making sense.
May cost a few quid but would be paying out for the leads anyway and knowing it has been done right is a price worth paying.

Can i just ask 1 more silly question :)
Are the main earth points the gearbox and the engine ?

I have looked at the diagram posted by Marc and can only see 2 earth points but reading back the info says there are 3 the extra one being the body ?

Sorry for being a numpty but just need to be sure

...and the second one to the body (probably inner wing, under/behind the battery).
Just two in total.

...and 3-rd one onto the plate welded to the side of the battery.
There are several wires bolted over it.
