Check also main battery-engine/gearbox-chassis main earth/ground cable for clean connections, and main Batt+ connection to the starter solenoid.
Use a second (jump-start) battery as well. If that speeds things up, replace the battery.

Thanks will check the connections and earths tomorrow and see from there :)

The bosch diesel pump where is it supposed to be on the mounting bolts? It has like an adjustment on slotted holes, ours is almost all the way to the front with a very slight gap is this good?

It's fine if the timing is correct but worth checking properly... Cold diesel engines need a far bit of timing advance for easy starting as there's a delay been the moment when injection commences and subsequent combustion when the engine is cold so the timing is advanced to compensate...

Possibly, if the static timing of the pump is significantly retarded this could possibly account for both issues...

If, however, the retardation is significant, performance will be well down and the engine will run quietly with very little 'diesel knock'

My fathers says its down on power abit, i dknt know as i havent driven it before, the diesel pump is almost fully retarded i think at the moment, its turned almost all the way back to the engine block side. This makes it retarded?

I can't remember now unfortunately... I'd be tempted to move it to the middle of its travel and see if anything changes...

When moving the pump, slacken the injector delivery pipe unions to relive stress on them as the pump moves to a new position...

Turning it in the direction of rotation will retard it and vice versa. I think it rotates clockwise looking from the cam belt end. So you need to turn it clockwise looking from the back of the pump.

So as it is now its advanced because the pump is almost all the way clockwise

Excellent Peter, I've learned something today :D

Yes, when looked at from the cambelt end the direction of rotation will indeed be clockwise...

The endless problems of how to describe something on the car...
Left-Right :?: Driver's seat or when gazing at the engine?
Nearside-Offside :?: Just about pointless; gave up on that one years ago!
Front-Back :?: Still good, except maybe for the new Ami

:-D Absolutely Chris, it's always been a problem

Left and right as I understand it is when sat in the driver's seat and not when standing in front of the car looking under the bonnet...

Nearside is closest to the kerb (or side of the road) when driving along in a forward direction on the correct side of the road in your country... So your nearside will be our offside

Indeed, the new Ami will be a problem... It'll need a sign on it saying 'FRONT'

In Sir Terry Pratchetts' book "Wintersmith" there is a scene where some children are making a snowman. The smallest child (who is wearing so many layers of clothing it is not possible to determine their gender) had had letters embroidered into their clothing; R and L onto their mittens, F and B onto the front and back of their jacket, T on the bobble hat and (presumably) U on the underside of their boots. "This meant that while you couldn't know what it was, you could be certain it was the right way up and which way it was facing".

The joke from that is "So that's why my wife has C&A in her knickers."
