As trailed previously here he is a fictional character who used to "front" the regular "Trade Tricks" section of Car Mechanics Magazine with "Barry Cade's Garage Casebook".

The column was initially written by Jonathan Wood, and the "avatar" of Barry his fictional self was loosely based on Jonathan. Jonathan has a catalogue of award winning impeccably researched motoring books, some of which are mentioned in this article. I think he hails from Ludlow these days.

Ironically I seem to have mislaid the copy I found. I looked for it back in October to send up to Neil with his map that I had borrowed but it was not to be found!! I'm sure it will turn up at some point during the lockdown!1 :-D

Car Mechanics is the only decent car magazine now, at least the only one that shows you how to repair them.

As a kid of about ten (so 1956ish) I had a birthday present called Brickplayer. It had plans for bungalows, signal boxes etc plastic windows and doors and separate bricks! Full size bricks were about an inch long, there were three quarter and half bricks plus various others. The bricks we’re build up using a flour mix, brick by brick. I think it was “O” gauge and took for ever. The bricks were reusable by soaking the finished model in water to dissolve the cement. I was killed off by Lego but I can’t think why!
Does anyone else remember Brickplayer?

I don't remember that I'm afraid Maurice, my predecessor to Lego was Airfix Betta Bilda which was very similar to lego as far as the bricks were concerned but it had far more realistic roofs made from green clip together tiles and the door and window frames had pvc glazing. I thought it was much more realistic than lego!! :)

I don't remember those either Maurice, but I do remember and had a kit that consisted of a plastic baseplate into which you inserted thin metal rods, looked like scaffolding when inserted, you then slid the bricks down between them. Can't remember what it was called but I'm sure someone will. A bit dangerous I would have thought if a child fell on them! Probably why they dissapeared.

Brickplayer used red/pinkish bricks made of terracotta? I think it was out of production by the mid 60s. It took hours to make something and then hours to set so like all kids I got fed up with it. I remember playing with the bricks for years, loaded into Dinky toy lorries etc. Plastic building kits took over such as above an then Lego took over the world.

I had a huge Betta Bilda kit as a kid and always felt you could be a lot more creative with it than the Lego of the time, due mainly to the small bricks and proper windows... As you say Mick, the green click-together roof tiles were great for making very realistic buildings :D

I also had a lot of red roof tiles too...

I once built a tall factory chimney... My dad thought it could be more realistic with real smoke issuing from it so he put a lighted Woodbine in the fireplace at the bottom and it looked good until it melted the first course of bricks above the fireplace

I vaguely remember that Maurice :) I had one but I was not that taken with it...

I have memories of how messy the cement was and there one could see at an early age I was never going to be successful with anything involving glue or viscous liquids... And so it remains... I'm still lethal with a tube of glue
