To elaborate on Watford's cinematic history, starting with the Odeon name. Originally there were two in Watford as I said

The High Street Odeon
BFTW
BFTW
and The North Watford Odeon 200yds from my home which later became Waitrose and then finally into flats.
BFTW
BFTW
Later The Odeon group bought the Gaumont and moved there when the high street became Caters Supermarket with Top Rank club above
BFTW
BFTW
The Gaumont had been Watford's luxury cinema until the company got into difficulties and sold to Odeon.
BFTW
BFTW
Meanwhile the three independants soldiered on, The Carlton
BFTW
BFTW
The Empire
BFTW
BFTW
which became a Cannon
BFTW
BFTW
& The Essoldo
BFTW
BFTW
which then became a Top Rank Bingo Hall
BFTW
BFTW
and finally an upper class apartment block
BFTW
BFTW
So now the film fans have to drive slightly out of town to the Vue at Woodside
BFTW
BFTW
or stay in town and walk through the INTU Shopping Centre to find the Cineworld with all its mod cons
BFTW
BFTW
BFTW
BFTW
And now you know as much as I do :!: :-D

This was our local cinema 'The Embassy' at Petts Wood. Can only remember visiting it three times, once in the '40's to see 'The Wizard of Oz' then 'Two Way Stretch with Peter Sellars, must have been in the '60s I think and soon after 'The millionaire'ss' Peter Sellars again and Sophia Loren. It was demolished in '73 to make way for a supermarket.

We had a flea-pit of a cinema in Paggers years ago called the Electra...

Used to love going there, it had a dim screen and a brilliant atmosphere with that old moth-eaten smell about it!

The facade has been retained and the shell of the building is now a parade of small, specialist shops... A very sympathetic conversion very well done :)

Going through my wardrobe boxes for the new photo memory thread I came across some of my toys from when I were a lad:

I started my model boating hobby with the most basic model boat going, which thrilled me to bits and I sailed it for hours in rock pools at Botany Bay Broadstairs:
Own work
Own work
Eventually Dad deemed me responsible enough to move up to a motor boat which I also loved. This one was replaced by a newer plastic model from Hornby but that is buried deep in my storage container so this is the first tin plate one I had:
Own work
Own work
Having mastered the arts of sailing and motoring I decided it was time for more adventure and treated myself to my first submarine:
Own work
Own work
From there I moved on up through the model boat world until a mere 10 years ago I reached my peak with the Calypso (featured on POTD some time ago) model which I actually sold last year to make more space in the study!! :-D

Does it still work if you put an ever ready in it Mick :?:

"This Sutcliffe “Merlin” electric speedboat is guaranteed to get to the bath taps well ahead of the rubber duck! In production from 1963 and powered by Ever-Ready and not a spring means this 12 inch long beauty will go on and on. The boat is in great condition and comes complete with its little plastic flag which was usually the first thing to find it’s way to the bottom of the pond! The box is there too as is the original internal packaging all be it resembling screwed up brown paper. The box has a detached flap which is present.

Sutcliffe fact: John W Sutcliffe started the company in a premises he shared with a relative who was a joiner however he quickly moved into his own premises in the early 1900’s on Town Street in Horsforth near Leeds."

The name 'Triang' brings back some memories, along with Hornby and Dinky.

I suspect it's fair to add Corgi, Matchbox, Meccano and Budgie to that list Peter? :-D

Meccano yes Mick but I think Matchbox and Corgi came later. I'm thinking of what was available when I was at school, 1940's -'50s. :?

Don't remember those but I wasn't into motorbikes, passed my test on a Vespa in '55, ran it until I was 17, from then on it was cars. Had a few painful experiences on 2 wheels. :-| :-s

Remember these.? Barry Cade special

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

In a row, these narrate the search for Barry Cade's Garage Casebook....

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 10 Oct 2019, 10:53 Barry Cade's "Tricks of the trade" from Car Mechanics...….was it ever called Barry Cade's Garage Casebook?

100 Points for anyone with an old tatty 1970's or 80's Car Mechanics Magazine who can supply an image of the said "Barry Cade's Tricks of the Trade" column.

Meanwhile here's some useful information (usefulness is always in the eye of the beholder!)

anyway, it appears that Barry Cade was in fact a fictional character, who didn't own a garage, even though he had his mugshot on every column! That's if the internet is to be believed.

From thedovecotspotforum

"Lets start with a quick question! "How many people remember, or have heard of, Barry Cade's Tricks of the Trade?"

Barry Cade was portrayed as a garage owner / mechanic and appeared in car magazines from the middle 60's onwards. Each month he published a trick of the trade, or tip if you prefer. In fact Barry Cade wasn't a garage owner, nor did he exist in real life. "Barry Cade" was the pseudonym of the Motoring Journalist and Author Jonathon Wood. As a matter of interest the sketch (or Avatar as we might call it today) of Barry at the top of each article was a fairly accurate portrayal of Jonathon.

Jonathon used to drink in the "Bear and Ragged Staff" Public House in Farnam, Surrey. I got to know him because one night a month the Bear and Ragged Staff hosted a meeting for local classic car enthusiasts. Jonathon used to pick our brains at these meetings and quite often what was discussed ended up as a trick of the trade topic, and I am pleased to say that my suggestions were put into print on a number of occasions.

I last met with Jonathon in early 1973 and he was still writing the Tricks of the Trade column at that time. A decade or so later the series was still running, in Car Mechanics Magazine from memory, but I don't think that Jonathon wrote those later articles as they definitely didn't appear to be in his earlier writing style.
