This sign points to two significant destinations. My home town and my former place of gainful employ 😉

One I'm always keen to return to and the other I have no intention of returning to ever 🤣 I served a life sentence of 42 years there with no time off for good behaviour...
and here's the other side of the sign in a slightly grubbier condition... what are all those little concrete posts about :-D

It points to a place of my former employ too, Wolverton, I ran my car finding business from there above the Thrifty vehicle rental franchise in Waterside Park, who used the unit workshop space and we used to jointly employ car valets and the odd driver. We used to have a great game ever evening getting 20 odd cars into a workshop which really only had room for 18. We were not above using the sunroof to exit the last car parked in each row!! :-D

This one's in Ravenstone... A rather fine one and in excellent condition :D

Spot the blue faced clock on the church tower...
If you follow the road to North End and keep going you'll arrive at the site of the long-gone Ravenstone Junction where the Stratford-on-Avon line via Towcester met the Northampton to Bedford line...

A possible remnant of the latter can be seen in the Pictures of the Day thread ;)

East Lothian with its treasure trove of signs in and around Stenton just west of the A1 near Dunbar.

We went up to the crossroads to paraphrase Robert Johnson

Coincidence corner. My specialist doctor at the RVI was a Mr. Stenton, never heard the word before, or since until this showed up.
Also, swapped houses with a Pauline Dunbar - she was lovely.

There must be some of those finger posts around here - some near Beamish IIRC - one to "No Place" and "Quaking Houses".
Must explore.

While driving around trying to find a nice one, or on normal journeys with a pre-programmed eye adds a touch of randomness to the exercise, Geograph is a fantastic resource playing round with the Browser Tab, to select an appropriate quest.

So here is the Browser page absolutely festooned with 10,371 fingerpost signs. To the left of the page (I have selected England as an example but as reported yesterday I was dabbling about in East Lothian, and all parts of the United Kingdom are covered), there is a list of Counties.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/browser/#!/q ... England%22

Just for the latest posters (other than me) on the thread here's one from the list for Hertfordshire, and one for County Durham.

Fingerpost signs/ pre-warboys with the County "ring" on top are a bit of a rarity in Hertfordshire here's one

and in County Durham, in 2020 this was still there and has been spruced up at bit. At Blackhouse next to the former Charlaw Inn, a route I was more than familiar with, and indeed my Triumph GT6 suffered a sheared kingpin there and I very nearly lost a wheel back in the 1980's. Finger post signs with the County Ring are also a rarity in Durham.

I seem to have gone downhill a bit today with raging throat and choking. So my trip may well be delayed as I can't see me getting a negative test tomorrow!! Stayed in bed today due to lack of energy so at least I'm catching up on reading!! :)

Something I find helps with a sore throat is Peppermint tea with a teaspoon of a black treacle based cough syrup (you can also add your normal amount of sugar). It sounds strange (and my Mum HATED the taste!), but it works for me.

Thanks James, unfortunately we can't get a delivery until Saturday evening so no ingredients available till then, by which time I hope it will have eased considerably. Just had my soft bread and thick marmalade served which is my normal treatment so see how it goes :)

Came across this one today by chance, taking a photo was compulsory. Nice touch spelling out mile/miles in full...how many road signs in the United Kingdom do that. Probably just this one.

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 28 Jul 2018, 19:51 Well not exactly a fingerpost but an old sign with a perfect patina...even a bit of the 3 missing, beautifully faded and the little reflectors as dull as ditchwater, and probably wouldn't respond to the brightest of headlights on full beam.

Got to be close to being the best old sign in the UK.....unless you can find a better one, photograph it and post it up here :-D

Today, wonder if the glass reflectors still put on a show when caught in your headlights!
