Joined the AA in 1958, never used an AA box but I know the RAC key was the same.

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
Here's the map concerned, there are two possibles but from the siting of your box I'd go for the one at Shiel Bridge ringed in yellow. The one in green is not sitting as well with reference to the loch and hills. Unfortunately the guide does not give box numbers but hopefully you can identify that from the location:
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
Thanks Mick, Looking at your page is that also a box at Invergarry?
Has the right sort of intersection.
The slide has a Green Signed road going right I think to Fort William and Straight ahead is also a green signed road. Lokks like that could well be the A82 which now has priority on street view. Coming back up from the picture is the road that would be the A 87 heading up towards Gairloch.
Ill revisit the slide and see if I can glean anything cleared from it.

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
Yes it is a box, just that the loch looks wrong there to me. The hills on both sides suggest you are looking down the loch towards the sea not across it as would be the case at Glengarry. I would have thought that one would have a ridge going across the background on the far side of Lock Oich?

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
Looking at the order of the slides, I was wrong in thinking the AA box photo was taken on the way up to Gairloch, it was taken on the way south and home. There is a pic of the "commando memorial" at Spean bridge before the AA Box, and after that a shot of eating fish and chips with a railway Sleeper car behind which I presume will be fort willliam.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑24 Nov 2020, 17:17 Yes it is a box, just that the loch looks wrong there to me. So I think the AA box is South of Fort William....what does your handbook have to offer?

OK, further south after Fort William there are two possibilities around Inverary as you can see on this map:
There is another possible just north of Fort William but I think the fourth one (Arrowed in yellow) just south of Fort William at Carnach seems much closer to the junction and loch view:

Cheers Mick I will have a mooch around your suggesstions. I did find out that Ballachulish Bridge wasnt started until 1972 and opened in 1975, so very probably we may have used that ferry in 1972 although I cant remember it.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑24 Nov 2020, 19:27 OK, further south after Fort William there are two possibilities around Inverary as you can see on this map:

Edit.....From the info Mick supplied the main road did go around by Kinlochleven so I guess we just used that instead of a wait for the ferry.

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
It is really quite likely that we used the A82 via Kinlochleven and emerging at that junction. In 1972 it was the main road to Fort William.
This is the streetview which I think is a fair approximation to the view on the slide

I think you have put your handbook to good use, I think it is
Box 496 Carnach Tel:Ballachulish 246
Location: Fort William - Tyndrum A.82 / Ballachulish A.828
Do you concur
Thanks Neil

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
Yes I think so. The description certainly fits but as you know I don't do google unless I get the old pc going which I can't at the moment as SWMBO is working in the study so if you are happy with the pictorial comparison given the time difference, I'm certainly happy with the slide against my map experienced interpretation of the books map. So yes Box 496 will do for me!!

Apologies if this has already been posted...
What a great service the AA offered before the advent of social media!
I never knew they did this until today and what a positively charming picture
Car looks to me like an Austin A40 Somerset but not 100% sure...
And a MK1 Ford Consul in the distance perhaps?

Re: FCF AA BOX Challenge 2019-Just Jersey left!
New audience every day Jim, no apology required.
That box was situated according to the AA database of such things at the junction of the A30 Exeter to Honiton with the B3181 Clyst St Mary, and was labelled as "Moor Lane" telephone Exeter 67262.
Now some FCF locals may know exactly where it was, but Mick does have an AA Handbook which will have it on one of the maps, or the old ordinance survey delvers may be able to precisely identify the location. Then there is streetview but I guess the A30 may be very different in 2021 to what it was in the 50's/60's.
I'll have a faf see if we can extract some trivia from the prompt of your picture

This is where it was (centre of image)
And this is where it isn't now. Long gone.
