Well Davie no one has set foot in Jersey since at least May 24th 2016 when the thread started so its well overdue a visit :-D

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 24 Jul 2019, 00:06 Yes we await a post from an FCF Member with an original photograph of the Trinity Box on Jersey to complete the challenge. In the meantime, I have discovered a few paragraphs from a study of the history of the telephone Kiosk in Jersey posted up in the "What do you know about Jersey?" thread, link below...

"Finally, there is a single example of a preserved AA Box, No. 687 (figure 20), located opposite Trinity Church. This box is constructed from hardwood and when in use it contained a telephone to connect to the AA emergency switchboard. These boxes were often fitted with subscriber type coin collecting boxes, although earlier some simply contained a single telephone that was connected via a private circuit directly to the AA offices. Access was only available to AA members, who were provided with a Yale type key to enable access. Originally a number of these boxes were installed around the island during 1953 including number 686 at St Ouen’s Bay, at Gorey on the corner of Rue a Don and Gorey Village, and at St John near the church. Some of these were replaced by steel pillar style telephone mounts starting in February 1977. This latter type became favoured by the AA needing lower maintenance before being finally abandoned by the organization in 2002 because of the rise in mobile telephone usage by motorists. The Trinity box was saved as a result of a campaign by local residents in April 1988.

Important AA Box related news on the BBC:

One of Britain's last AA telephone boxes saved.

"I soon learnt there are only a handful of AA boxes left in their original locations across the country, so when I realised this one hadn't been listed, I wrote to Cadw straight away," he said.

His actions led to a review by Cadw, and now Box 161 has been granted Grade II-listed status."

21 AA? where have you dug up the other 2 from? Boxes in peoples gardens/ or Museums? Original Roadside Locations are the only ones that count in the challenge!

Box 161 at Nantyffin Crickhowell has been called at by 2 of the FCF faithful so far....

Can I add a new box to the list? Box 121? I was at The AA this morning, to work on an Amazon locker, and I spotted a few choice AA memorabilia I would like to share;

Excellent find!
Box 121 as indicated on the name plaque is Dotterel (which to me is a wading bird) formerly situated on the
Bridlington - Scarborough A.165 / Hunmanby (Unclassified)

I do know Hunmanby, as it does have enough red on its red church clock to have made it to the POTD Red church clocks collection.

As for the exact location of the box, I will put a task on the Trivia Investigation Team thread, and trust some old ordinance survey experts come up with the goods :-D

I discovered this story regarding an AA Box which is now located at Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum, Whisby Road, North Hykeham.

Image

The box itself was to be the one from Cappercleugh by St Mary's Loch, and in the process of acquiring it.
The AA's offer was formally accepted in April 2003, and transport possibilities were investigated. However, the project came to an abrupt halt when Historic Scotland applied for all remaining boxes in Scotland to have listed status, which would mean that they could not be moved. The box has since seen restoration work....

Further discussions with the AA led to the identification the box formerly at the A41 / B4451 junction at Gaydon, Warwickshire (Box No. 3), which had become surplus to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust's requirements, and it was rapidly moved to Lincoln, arriving at the Museum at the end of May 2003.

With assistance from the AA, a retired AA archivist who provided further information about the construction and fittings, and a number of individuals who have donated or loaned items, the box has been restored to form part of a small display on the AA, and the box has been restored to carry the identity of box number 122, Caenby Corner (junction of the A15 and A631, approximately 10 miles north of Lincoln.)

Here is the original box number 3 in its original location.

Reading through the email I received there are two owned by the Scottish Executive, the one on Jersey is owned by the local council, and there are others owned by museums. The ones on the list provided to me by The AA are owned and looked after by The AA.

Can you help me find this one please Mick. One of the slides from a holiday in Gairloch (Ross and Cromarty) in July 1972 presumably on the drive up. The sign to the right does say Fort William I think but couldnt make out the other signs.
