The last one I saw in use was still powering one of the lifts for a London Deep Level shelter about 10-15 years ago.

I'll be reading that with great interest later this evening Peter :)

I have many happy memories of Television magazine from my teenage years :D For me it was essential reading!

So much so that I had it on subscription from about age 12...

Hands up if you've ever seen one of these working out in the wilds before ? This one is in captivity at Amberley, and chatting to one of the diseasel enthusiasts there he reckoned he knew of only one other up in Wales. In case you are pondering, it's an automatic monorail 'mover'. It's job was to trundle along the monorail towing - or pushing - a rake of skip wagons. When it got to its destination, a peg sticking out of the monorail would knock it into neutral, and it'd stop there until someone earned their keep and came along and tilted the skips to empty them. Apparently they were used on all sorts of construction sites, but this one came from a sewage works where it was used to move 'fertiliser' from one end to the other. Despite it being a diesel engines day, this runs a JAP engine. :)

Not knowing where else to park this - but Historic England have put together an archive of 252 photos of the construction of the M6 motorway, mostly from the 1960s.

They built and opened the M5 in stages since we have been here. You had to go through Bristol until they finished the box girder bridge, which were prone to falling down apparently. They also had one on the A9 at Inverness which was delayed, you could see the other side for several years but with a gap in the bridge, you had to go miles round to get back onto the A9.

The M5 was practically deserted after about 6.0.pm as was the A9 all day at first - now they are slowly converting to make it all dual carriageway such is the traffic volume. It used to be 750 miles from here to wick in the '70s but now with all the road improvements its only about 700.

The M42 was the same, no traffic for the first year or so, been round it recently?

I'll enjoy a paddle around that site for other stuff too. Did a search to see if the Lancaster (Forton) Services appeared on the M6 photos, and it does

In a cafe on an episode of George Gently (excellent TV, 60's cars, and lots of familiar NE location spots for me)

Reminds me of sausage beans and chips served in little metal dishes, before the match in Bowers restaurant Newcastle.

PS The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted Bowers Restaurant in Get Carter.

The most thumbed through of mine was the Observer's book of birds then Birds eggs, still have both today.

Wiki has a decent piece about them, and pretty much like the I-Spy books encouraged appreciation and interest in all sorts of subject areas, an education which I enjoyed as a youngster and carry with me today.

There was a Victor FB and FC version of the VX 4/90 but it was the stripe down the side that designated it a VX - or so I seem to remember.
