On a Xantia, ABS issues are usually due to a faulty sensor. If you don't have access to diagnostic equipment, you can measure the resistance of the sensors at the ABS ECU connector.

That's a nice exclusive estate!

I'd change the sensors in pairs though, and avoid GSF, I went through 3 pairs of theirs to get a set that would work, check resistance before you connect them up.
why?

Exclusive estate with winter pack, that's a rare beast! Good luck on finding someone that can balance those wheels these days....

On the ABS check the fuse hasn't been pulled - failure of the ABS rings on the front CV joints is common which can mean the ABS firing when it shouldn't, which can make it difficult to stop, so pulling the fuse takes the ABS out of the equation.

thanks everyone ! going out now to pull the abs plug and check resistance's.
RichardW , what means it has the winter pack ? and what is difficult about balancing the wheels ? should not be any different to anything else :|

thanks davoxx, the car has been sat 4 years and is a gamble, i will change what needs changing to get it through the MOT first. then do things properly if it passes !

It's got headlamp washers, and will also have (or would when new) heater washer jets - you can see the black bits on the bumpers which are the headlight washers. The trouble with the wheels is they have no centre, so they need a special machine and / or adaptor that allows them to be spun up on the studs rather than through the centre - most places have got rid of their machines that can do this these days....

I noticed just now they have no centre hole , thought it was strange . I've changed the abs sensor , the light is still on though, I will change all the fuses after lunch . Apart from that having the front right in the air , the ball joint is toast 🤦🏼‍♂️ .

If it interests anyone , the car came with a boat load of spare parts I need to move , I will list them all later, I hope they can help someone 👍

Did you drive the car after changing the sensor? If you did not, take it for a quick drive first. The ABS ECU has a 'fault checking' mode that (if there was an error) it will check the wheel speeds before accepting the fault has been resolved (this is so people don't try bypassing the sensor). If the problem WAS a faulty sensor and it has been replaced the ABS light will go out when you go over 10KM/H (or, in English, 6MPH).

Thanks HellRazor , I was reluctant to drive it because it's been sat and isn't road legal, I took it up the road and now have no lights on the dash , result !
