They are two different things:

Blingo Outlet.PNG
Expansion TankCoolant Outlet Housing
You can see the green temp. sensor contained in it.

Beware of Amazon though, as a lot of fake 'branded' sensors stating to infiltrate here.

Eurocarecare.net are generally very good £12.12 inc. VAT:

is that not the part you told me last week?

Yes, and given that you've replaced it twice now you can probably rule it out.

I'd also doubt if the relay is at fault. I can't appreciate how, and have never seen one, fail in the way you describe.

Yes that's the part - so if you changed that a few times, then I can only suggest you start looking at the wiring connections from the sensor to the Engine ECU:

1220 is the Engine Temp Sensor bottom right.
1320 is the relevant part of the Engine ECU - in this case the 48 Pin Brown connector - Pins F2 and H1 that hold the wires 1366 & 1357 from the temp. sensor.

Also Check the Fuse F1 and F21 in the engine Fuse box

As for the diagram - Item 1522 is the 2-speed cooling fan electrical control unit - BUT as far as I can tell, this is the part that is missing on your model (which will usually be the relay unit by the radiator fan assembly that aren't there on your model) - the function being controlled by the engine ECU on yours. Certainly that part is not coming up as present based on your VIN.

Ok, so another diagnostic needs doing if the engine management light is on again. There will be a fault code logged for this for sure, if you can get that and any others that may give some pointers.

Went to look for codes with a really cheap reader, turned ignition on few seconds and 3 beeps with and warningabs fault on radio, and economy mode, van would not try and start, nothing on turning key. Plugged reader in and 3 codes, 2 p2562 and one new one U0073 p, cleared codes and van started. Think I will have to bite the bullet and put it into a garage, any recommendations in Swansea area?

Ok, so that last code is important as it deals with communication between the ECUs on the vehicle network.
Fault Code: U0073

Description of Fault: Intersystems CAN: CAN in error. This means there are faults in communication between ECUs on the CAN network.

Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes

Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: Reversible deactivation of the vehicle speed limiter; Reversible deactivation of the vehicle cruise control; Downgrading of the ESP function; Deactivation of the traction control; Performance of ESP settings impossible; Reversible deactivation of the limiting of the vehicle speed; Deactivation of the request for regeneration of the particle filter from the diagnostic tool.

Symptoms: Engine Management Lamp will be lit.
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Starting problem
  • Lack of power
  • Absence of automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine (for vehicles equipped with "stop and start")
  • Problem with automatic restarting of the internal combustion engine (Vehicle equipped with "stop and start")
Suspect Areas: Engine ECU; Intersystem CAN network
So the suspect areas may also account for your other cooling problem, being that the fan speed commands are being sent from the engine ECU. If there is a fault on the IS CAN network, then this could be responsible.

Given this particular fault, you are probably going to need either someone with good vehicle electrical experience with CAN systems - or cut your losses and get it into Bassetts in Swansea where they will get it diagnosed with Diagbox and may already have some experience with the issue.

If we had this fault code up earlier, we could of probably pointed you straight there and bypassed the cooling issue - which may be a red herring.

If the wiring is ok, then I suspect it may be your engine fusebox....

Double check your battery first though. Those sort of non-starting faults are often due to low battery, and you already know that your's is iffy. Try disconnecting battery, leave for 10 mins, connect battery up and also connect to jump vehicle.

Note also that communication errors are often generated as a result of code-reading using certain diagnostic kit. Certainly that often occurs on my Ford Transit using Forscan and an ELM interface.

Disconnected the battery as suggested, 12.3v reading with meter, reconnect and starts as normal, but was starting ok after clearing codes last night.

That's unlikely to be the cause of the fans running on or the battery flattening. Also, unless you have previously cleared the codes, that could be a historic code.

I wouldn't be overly reliant on fault codes, but it will be worth getting it on a Lexia so that you can actively monitor the various sensor readings, e.g. temp readings, to see if anything is amiss.

it's a local citroen peugeot specialist that's been there for years and as far as I know there is no one local to me with Lexia so I have to put my trust in him. Engine light back on today.

it's been a month since my van went in to a local garage, turbo actuator was changed which he showed me a printout from citroen about a common problem with it, if it had been a year or so ago they were compensating for it, he also said the battery was failing so changed that, couldn't find my receipt for it so lesson learnt. anyway no warnings or fans running so happy days. maybe the title of this thread should be changed to reflect the outcome. thanks for all the help and I'm sure I will be back another time.

keep safe, Wayne.
