DPF and engine warning light P2562

Post by wayne10 »

the DPF runs on my van very regularly, too much i think, some times it will happen 3 or 4 times a day for 6/7 mins at a time. i believe this is running my battery down especially as winter is coming and failed to start this morning, 40 mins on charger and no problem starting, checked the alternator and get a steady 14.2v at the battery, been readin a thread about the eolys being required to help the regen could this be a problem? dont even know if the 2013 1.6 hdi has it? is there a warning for this or the adblue?

What makes you think the DPF is regenerating so often? Have you checked with diagnostics? Out of all the vehicles I have driven I have never once had a clue when regeneration is taking place. The only exception was a VW T6 where you could tell by the smell from the exhaust. Yes when the vehicle is regenerating it puts on extra electrical loads but it is designed to cope with this, Have you actually had the battery tested? now its starting to get colder any weakness in the battery will start to show.
If the eolys was low the car would tell you, If the van has a SCR system again you would have a warning to tell you the AdBlue is low. The DPF & SCR systems are completely separate things.

You do have a particle filter on your Berlingo (assuming this is for VIN ending 801), but no SCR system (with Adblue).

Regeneration only takes place with the engine running obviously, so should in no way impact your battery. The glow plugs and power consuming equipment are only activated by the engine ECU if it deems it necessary to increase engine load and raise the exhaust gas temperature more quickly to the 450 °C needed for assisted regeneration. So on longer runs these are rarely used. If you are doing a lot of shorter journeys then it may activate electrical consuming devices more frequently to get the temp. up, but iff the alternator is doing its job properly, it should provide sufficient charge to the battery to compensate.

Your battery issue may be just down to service life and reduced capacity, so it won't hold as much of a charge for as long a period. If your battery is over 5 years old, then expect its performance to diminish.

i may be mistaken by the dpf, when i regularly turn the van off and get out the fans run quite loudly for 6/7 mins, i assumed that was the dpf regen, this is what i thought was running the battery down, battery was new earlier this year.

That will be related to the engine temperature / coolant outlet housing / temp. sensor or similar.

The fans stating on are usually to provide cooling if it thinks the engine is too hot - and of course will run on battery power when the engine is switched off. This should not normally be happening, especially at this time as we're not exactly having Sahara desert temperatures in Wales at present :-D

So I think you have to look at the cooling system / outlet housing or related areas.

A malfunctioning of the engine coolant temperature sensor can cause the cooling fan to operate at fast speed, but there can be other issues relating to high and low speeds, so might be worth getting it diagnosed to see of there are any faults logged.

got the battery on charge for a few hours, is 14.2v correct from the alternator? would have thought it would be more erratic? temperature sensor has been changed in the last 18mths.

Yes, that's about spot on.

As for your sensor - dare I ask where you bought it from? If from ECP then it's very likely it might be duff.

Same goes for your new battery, Their own brand Lion batteries are awful & 6 months is a good length of time to get out of them.

ECP are known (on this forum and elsewhere) as Euro Crap Parts.

sensor was indeed from ECP (recommendations from where?) but not the battery, the fans dont run every time, just seem to be few times in a row then ok for a while, been ok today, have had it run after about a 3 mile journey.

last time the fans ran when the engine was off I checked the temperature gauge and was midway, wouldn't that have been higher to switch the fan on?

There are a good range including Delphi and Febi Bilstein. Make sure you match this part number: 1338C1.

Beware of Amazon though, as a lot of fake 'branded' sensors stating to infiltrate here.

Eurocarecare.net are generally very good £12.12 inc. VAT:

These are the fan speed triggering temperatures for your vehicle. Bear in mind if your Air Conditioning is switched on, the low speed fan will kick in regardless - so switch the A/C off before testing. Taking that into mind, if the fan is coming on (without air conditioning active) earlier than these temperatures below then something is triggering it and it could be the temperature sensor / relay / short etc.
Descriptionmanual gearbox
Temperature threshold (For illumination of the "STOP" warning light on the instrument panel)118 °C
Temperature threshold (For extinguishing the "STOP" warning light on the instrument panel)115 °C
Triggering threshold (Fan unit at slow speed)96 °C
Triggering threshold (Fan unit at high speed)105 °C
Temperature (Air conditioning cut-off)Negative external temperatures
