X7 Tourer rear 12v socket problem

The 12v socket at the rear seems to have stopped supplying power as my coolbox wouldn't work when plugged in but did from the 12v socket between the two front seats.

My first thought was to check the fuse but this is where the problem arises. Page 195 of the handbook suggests I should check F6.

The text seems to indicate the fuse is in the main fusebox there. But the illustration actually refers to the table on the opposite page. The values of the fuses there line up with the large table which leaves me wondering where these four fuses are actually located.

I wondered whether they might be maxi-fuses but the values are rather low for that and then I saw what may be a secondary fusebox.

So, is that another fusebox which is not mentioned anywhere that I can see? If it is, how do I release it so that I can take the cover off to check this fabled fuse? And if it isn't, where the hell are these other four fuses?

Yes, fuse F6 is in the fuse box at the battery outlet shown in your last picture - the vertical fuse box with the red cover. It's called the BFDB (Boîte à Fusibles à la Débouché de la Batterie).


Yous should be able to unclip the red cover shown.

Not without removing the complete box unfortunately - there's another plastic clip at the lower (hidden) end of the red cover. I have tried to unclip just the top edge but that wasn't enough. The box has to come out first. Any removal procedure available?

Or maybe a parts diagram which might show how it's held in?

No, nothing specific.

I’m sure I took mine off to check a fuse on the MK II and don’t recall any issues, but I can’t remember now.

You will have to remove your battery then push in the 2 clips circled in blue and the box slides out.

Thanks for replying. I didn't get your post until I returned to the UK as our telephone line (and hence internet) in France went down and wasn't even repaired when we left for the UK last Saturday.

I managed to find those two tabs that you described myself and released the fusebox. I didn't take the battery out but instead removed the main fusebox cover so that some of the loom leading to the small fusebox had more room to move. I also took some photographs but frankly yours is quite good enough for anyone needing help.

FWIW the fuse turned out to be OK and the problem is the 12v socket itself which is a bit intermittent. I suppose I need to take the rear inner quarter panel out but that looks like a load of grief and I got round the problem by inserting the 12v plug and then making sure that it was pressed in (by the luggage in this case).
