Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 2015 MK2 Brake Fault

Post by jm96 »

Hi All,

I recently changed my brake pads on my C4. It has an electric hand brake so I had to use a diagnostic machine to release the callipers.

Unfortunately a few weeks after I have got a braking fault which has disabled my handbrake (meaning I can not engage it anymore). It is coming up with parking brake fault stop vehicle in the dashboard. So the handbrake no longer works when I move the button up or down.

I have read on a few places if you leave the ignition on whilst changing the brake pads it causes a fault on the braking system. I unfortunately forgot to turn the ignition off after releasing the handbrake.

I have plugged it onto a diagnostic machine and have come up with the following codes:

C156C(92) Electric parking brake (FSE) actuator sensors
C1561(00) Electric parking brake (FSE) right hand actuator

Has this happened to anyone before and is there a way of fixing this instead of taking it to the dealers!

I appreciate your responses.

Thanks,

A mistake others also make. Once the system is put into service mode, the battery should be disconnected, then the reconnection procedure for the battery and the handbrake system followed.

C156C92: Electric parking brake (FSE) actuator sensors: Short circuit to positive or short circuit to earth or open circuit. So either there is a short circuit between the LH and the RH line of the motorised brake calipers or the line supplying the LH or the RH motorised brake caliper is in open circuit (Sensor disconnected).

C156100: Is more specifically related to the Right Hand motorised brake caliper and signifies again either a short circuit to earth, positive or an open circuit.

Try switching the ignition on for 5 seconds, then activate the electronic switch to APPLY the parking break for 5 seconds. If it does not engage you may need to take the plunge and get it to the dealer to sort.

Hi Marc, I have the first fault C156c92 fse .
I was wondering a: where did you get that explanation from? ( I can't seem to find a workshop manual anywhere for this car!)
And b: are you able to ho into anymore detail ie am I looking for a rubbed wire/ faulty caliper motor?
Kind regards DJ

There is a technical service bulletin if you are getting an ESP or FSE warning lamp on with the "Brakes Fault" message, and one or more of the following fault codes:
C156C92, C00372F, C003712, C003711, C003701, C003762, C003A2F, C003A12, C003A11, C003A01, C003A62, C003811, C003B11.

If you are getting fault C156C92, then you need to check the continuity and insulation of the electrical harness between the ESP unit and the rear right and left brake caliper actuators.

You will need a special adaptor harness to do this and before doing so, the battery, ESP ECU, wheel sensors and rear motorised brake caliper actuators must be electrically disconnected.

So as this is a bit of a faff, you may want to get it booked in if you are having the warning message and this specific C156C92 fault code.

One of the specific problematic areas is on the rear intermediate electrical harness (1) in the area of the rear wheel arch on the side concerned, once you've released the wires from the spiral sleeve.

If they detect a problem with the wiring, then they will need to locate the issue which is likely to be a break in the wire somewhere.

If they have to replace the rear intermediate harness, it will be anywhere from 3.4 to 4.0 hours to do depending on your engine.

Hi Marc thank you so much for this information!. I had a quick look today and tracked the wiring harness to its different positions, it looks very exposed and looks in fairly poor condition. I've not had chance yet to strip it apart and look properly but this is z massive help thank you!
Can I ask is this information easy for me to obtain? Or is it main dealer information only?

No problems, it's main dealer info - chargeable, but I'm just sharing it with you as it looks relevant to your issue.

Okk so a little update, I found two corroded wires on the drivers side rear. I have soldered and heat shrieked the wires. Reset the fault codes using the code reader and re assembled.
Marc your an absolute hero for sending me in that direction! Thank you thank you thank you!

Hi,

Managed to fix it a couple of months ago, forgot to let you all know. As DJmorgan mentioned it was the same problem with mine. A corroded wire which was slightly attached and was hard to tell.

Was an easy fix after all, if anyone is having problems send me a pm will help you!

Thanks,

Hi,

What error codes have you got on the diagnostic machine?

The fix requires investigation of the condition of the electrical harness and confirmation of the corrosion or wiring breaks as shown. If they are as described in my post then you'll need to affect a repair or replace the harness. But you need to investigate the issue first.

The way to repair this is to check the error code and figure out what side the problem is. Once you know which side the problem is you need to use a multimeter and check the voltage coming through the pins which connect onto the brake calliper. Compare the readings with the other side brake calliper.

Whichever wire is showing a different reading check all the wire to the back and possibly there will be a cut on it due to corrosion. Just put a joint into it and everything should start working again.

Hello
I have just had my 2016 GP into the local Citroen dealer for the same brake problem and they have diagnosed a wiring problem similar to the ones reported in this article.
I unfortunately found this article after the event!
As the fault appears to be shoddy (sorry) "French" wiring which is obviously not protected from the elements and effects the braking system I would have thought this should be the subject of a re-call as it is potentially dangerous if you are unable to apply the parking brake.
Any Thoughts?
