C3 Picasso speedo cluster removal

Post by patriotbarrow »

Information on the internet is scarce and after a few failed attempts, I figured I'd ask here.

I need to remove the speedo/warning light/display cluster from my C3 Picasso to swap out the LCD for a newer one. I can't seem to be able to pull to make it pop out. I've tried wedging a screwdriver under the unit to get some leverage. I tried yanking it, pulling on it etc. God knows the groaning noises coming out of my car while I was attempting to do this.

Is there a fool-proof/easier way to do this? Or is it just "stick two allen keys at the back and pull until your back gives in"?

First you need to disconnect the battery (BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure)
C3 Picasso Instrument B.PNG
Tool 1375 Protectors
C3 Picasso Instrument A.PNG
Next:

ESSENTIAL: Protect the dashboard in the area around the instrument panel (1) using tool 1375

Unclip:
  • The instrument panel (1) ( as "a") using a pin drift.
  • The instrument panel (1) ( as "b", "c") (pull towards you) using trim removal tools
Detach the instrument panel (1).
Unplug:
  • The connector of the solar sensor
  • The connectors of the instrument panel (1)
Remove the instrument panel (1).

Refitting
Always replace the faulty clips ( as "a", "b") and protect the instrument panel (1).

Proceed in the reverse order to removal.

Once you have that off, then you need to follow this part:
C3 Picasso Instrument C.PNG
C3 Picasso Instrument D.PNG
C3 Picasso Instrument E.PNG
Remove:
  • The bolts (2)
  • The instrument panel lower trim (1)
Unclip:
  • The trim (3) ( as "a") using trim tools
.
Remove the trim (3).
Unclip:
  • The harness ( as "c").
Unplug:
  • The connector of the instrument panel display (4) ( as "b").
Remove:
  • The bolts (5)
  • The instrument panel display (4)
Refitting
Proceed in the reverse order to removal.

Follow the battery reconnection part of BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

Just remember to be patient - the last thing you want is to hear any snapping! These units are not cheap to replace and will need reprogramming if they have to be replaced.

Done! There's a slight trick to it; it really helps if there's two people. After undoing the first set of clips (can be done with a set of angled allen keys as long as they're not too thin), it helps to tug on the cluster. Short pulls do the trick and put less stress on the unit.

I now have a new display and bluetooth capabilities on my old donkey :)

Thanks for the invaluable info, Marc!

I can't advise you as to where / if there are any bulbs to replace - there are none on the back of the cluster itself as you can see:
image_2020-12-12_110130.png
So unless you can remove the 4 screws in the middle (only 2 are visible in the picture) and whether that allows a further panel to come off to see if there are any bulbs on the internal board, I can't say.

Thank you Marc. Tempted to fit in a new part instead as this may be simpler, does the onboard computer need to be reset once a new part has been fitted?

Ok, so several points:

You may be able to replace the internal central display - these are showing as available separately - so if it is the middle display that has gone you can order these separately. But I cannot tell you if there are bulbs that can be replaced once you get to the central module.

If you decide to go for a second hand one, remember that if you are replacing the instrument cluster, you need the correct one and secondly, the BSI compares the stored mileage between the BSI and the instrument cluster - whichever has the highest mileage, the other ECU gets updated. So beware if buying one from a higher mileage car, once you plug it in, your own car will adopt the higher mileage.

I can confirm part numbers and cost for you, but we do ask for a min Forum donation of £10 which will cover you for any future parts enquiries, parts diagrams for up to 2 years. More info here:

Ok, great, thanks for that. Give me a second to get something together for you.

I'll need your VIN to get the correct part number though. It's safe to post it here as only staff can see it once you have submitted your post.

Ok, so here is the diagram.

As you can see the display unit is available separately:

The complete Instrument Panel is part number: 1614344480, cost £716.92
The display unit alone is Item (6), part number: 9821851780, cost £339.74
image_2020-12-12_195310.png
All from Citroen, prices correct as of today.

As for fitting I can put a guide up for you regarding removal and replacement, but in either case, the display panel needs initialising with a diagnostic tool if replaced and to do that you will need a dealer or somebody with Diagbox.

I have to go out at preset, so if you want me to put a guide together it will be late tomorrow as I'm also in the process of selling one of my cars and they are turning up tomorrow too! :-D
