Engine rattle and timing out

Unread post by redangler »

Hi my Berlingo 5d petrol engine stalled on my drive when I got it going it sounded like a tank. The RAC guy came and checked the fuel which was clean. The oil is fine. It’s done 96k and is 2005 reg and has run as sweet as a nut. Could it have dropped a valve? Could this be its death rattle. Any advice would be welcome. I have no experience and could tell you where the plugs are if this could be a problem. It’s the harsh rattle that has got me worried.
Thanks in advance

If it sounds like a loud rasping noise, check the turbo air hose - even a slight hole / split can make this sound.

Was the RAC guy there when the engine was running? he should surely know what it sounds like.

No turbo on a 2005 Petrol Berlingo.

Any warning lights or fault codes? What exact engine do you have. They certainly aint known for dropping valves. First port of call would probably be a compression test and/or borescope into the combustion chamber. You can buy a half decent endoscope that connects to a laptop for under £20.
