automatic gearbox

Unread post by derbyshire1970 »

C4 Grand Picasso 2.0 160 break HDI fully automatic engine
Question
having spoken to Citroen they inform me that the automatic gearbox is sealed for life ? are they brushing me off or is this true?
Has anyone gone to the trouble of having the transmission fluid changed not that its to much trouble my garage want £70.00 to change

Any comments

Typically car manufacturers consider gearboxes to have a working life of ten years (or 150,000 miles, whichever happens first). Buried somewhere very deep in the small print will be words to that effect (but in very devious jargon).

Ignore all that, this is what they tell you. In fact the transmission oil should be changed to provide as long a life and an operationally efficient transmission as possible. Typically the oil on these transmissions should be changed about 30k miles - but it is entirely your choice.

The oil deteriorates over time as it heats and burns - along with any fine material from the gearbox which ultimately will affect performance and will lead to valve block failure. So always good preventative maintenance to do this if you want to look after the transmission.

The oil the transmission can't be changed in one go as about a third of it remains in the torque converter. So it typically takes about 3 changes to get it almost as near to a complete change as you'll get. Do one change, drive it for a week or so to circulate the new and old oil, then change it again and ditto for the third time.

Do you have the AM6 / AT6 box? If you are not sure post your VIN up so I can check (automatically masked).

Here you go. You will need to reset the oil counter using Lexia / Diagbox or other compatible Diagnostic tool with this capability.
Your vehicle is Euro 5 standard, so the gearbox oil has to be JWS 3324 or meet that specification and not JWS 3309, which is only for Euro 4 vehicles.

Citroen C4 Picasso (2011) AM6 Fully Automatic Gearbox Drain & Refill Procedure

Tooling
C4 AM6 Oil Tools.PNG
Topping Up Cylinder
Drain & Refilling.

Always replace the Drain Cap Seal and the Gearbox Oil Filler Seal

CAUTION: The gearbox must be drained when the oil is hot (60 °C minimum), to eliminate the impurities suspended in the oil.

Remember you cannot fully empty the gearbox. The total capacity (dry) is 7 litres and only 3 litres will drain out - with the remaining 4 litres the remaining in torque converter / box. This is why several drains over a short period of time are as near as you will get to a total swap.
  • Put the vehicle on a hoist.
  • Remove the under engine protection .
C4 AM6 Oil A.PNG
Remove:
  • The oil level plug (2) using a torx wrench
  • The oil overflow and drainage plug (1) using a 6-sided wrench.
N.B. : Approximately 3 litres of oil should flow out.

Refilling

Fit:
  • The oil overflow and drainage plug (1) (equipped with a new seal)
  • The top-up plug (2)
Remove the air filter housing.
C4 AM6 Oil B.PNG
Remove the filler plug (3).
Use the filling tool
Quantity of oil to be replaced: Approximately 3 litres.
Refit the filler plug (3) (equipped with a new seal).
Initialise the used oil counter (Follow the diagnostic equipment procedure).

Check the oil level
Prior conditions:
  • Vehicle level
  • Check that the gearbox is not in downgrade mode
  • Remove the filler plug (3)
  • Add 0.5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox
  • Apply the brakes firmly and move the lever through the various selector positions
  • Gear lever in position "P"
  • Engine running at idle
  • Oil temperature 60°C (+ 8 ; - 2 °C) (measuring of parameters using a diagnostic tool)
Remove the oil level plug (2).

(A) If there is a stream of oil then reducing to a sequence of drips:
  • Refit the oil level plug (2).
(B) If there is a sequence of drips or nothing:
  • Refit the oil level plug (2).
  • Stop the engine.
  • Add 0.5 additional litres of oil in the gearbox.
  • Repeat the top-up procedure.
N.B.: The level of oil is correct when the stream of oil becomes drop by drop.
  • Refit the oil level plug (2) (equipped with a new seal).
Check the oil level (continued)
Refit:
  • The oil filler plug (3) (equipped with a new seal)
  • The protective panel under the engine
  • The air filter housing
Too high a fluid level can cause:
  • Overheating of the fluid
  • Fluid leaks
Too low a level will lead to destruction of the gearbox.

would you also have access to the AT 8 speed auto please? as Ive just bought a 2019 C5 Aircross Auto 1.5 diesel. as I need to have it adapted to hand controls. there is no information on oil changes for the box or even fluid to use, which seems ridiculous.
Thanks in advance.

Nigel.

Additional post merged:
Hi,

Owing to a recent RDAC driving assessment because of nerve damage in my feet, I find Im back to a Citroen again,(there is no escape once your bitten :rofl2: ) this makes me really happy.

this time An 8 speed Automatic 2019 C5 Aircross 1.5 Turbo diesel with 30k on the clock.

Im having it converted to hand controls

It has a proper Torque converter gearbox, it took some time to find one amongst all the dry dual clutches out there.

Does anyone Have the specifications for the correct gearbox fluids please and service intervals?

somehow im expecting Citroen to say the box is lubricated for life but we all know thats a silly thing to accept.

Your help would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Nigel.

I have merged your posts to avoid further duplication.

Yes, they are still deemed, 'Sealed for life', hence why there is no scheduled oil change listed.
The oil used in the AMN8, ATN8 gearboxes is very low viscosity AW2 oil.
Gearbox TypeAMN8ATN8
Oil Volume6.8 litres6 litres
Volume required after emptying in after-sales service3.5 litres (including 1 litre overflow)3.5 litres (including 1 litre overflow)
Aftermarket Filling Volume2.5 litres2.5 litres
The exact type of 8 speed gearbox you have depends on the marking on the gearbox itself, as they have different gear ratios.

Ive just purchased a C5 Aircross 8 speed 1.5 diesel 2019 Automatic and Simon at Pleiades checked it over on Monday for me, he looked up the maintenence shedule from his citroen info on his computer and the box is a torque converter box not a dual dry clutch automated manual. The service intervals are 30 k the fluid costs £9.99 a litre and the total fluid capacity is 12 litres..I think the Citroen service doesn't account for a full fluid change.or maybe we have different gearboxes.it took me so long to find out what type of box it was, even my local citroen stealers didn't know, or make any effort to look it up, furthermore I went into their parts dept to order a parcel shelf and they said I would have to email them, and I said what's the point, Im ere now, they are not replying to emails, absolutely useless entities.Thank god for the Fcf and Pleiades Garage.

Well as you asked here, I'm just telling you what the official capacities are from Citroen's official information concerning this gearbox on the C5 AIrcross. The capacity is as I've stated above (6.8 or 6 litres) depending on the version. But take the advice or leave it.

The C5 Aircross was never fitted with a piloted manual gearbox, only a manual or proper automatic, as are most later vehicles, with most having the EAT6 or EAT8 fully auto boxes or manuals now.

Not arguing at all just relaying the info i was given on Monday which could equally be incorrect, I will question this at my next visit to Pleaides, thank you. Maybe Simon was looking at the wrong model? It is however an ATN8 gearbox.8 speed. Underneath ATN8 it says ATF.

Well I don't use third party info - just the official documentation.

The dry capacity of this gearbox is approximately 7 litres. 4 litres remain after emptying, leaving approx 2.5 litres for refilling plus 1 litre for overflowing as per the procedure. It is not 12 litres as you have been told.

As I said I have An ATN8 gearbox not An EAT8 which is the box you are quoting but I will question this later on.it is good to know that Citroen are using different gearboxes and may not be updating their service information sufficiently. Which is no reflection upon your efforts to find the correct information. I am not disagreeing with you. If you cant make comparisons and ask questions without offending people whats the point in the forum?
