Power steering oil pressure sensor switch

Unread post by Gatwick56 »

Hi All
First post...I have a citroen xzara picasso 1.6 diesel manual 2006 model.
Recently the power steering stopped working, I have flushed the system and replaced fluid, I still have the problem at low speed and whenever parking.
I decided to purchase a power steering oil pressure sensor switch (hoping this might be the fault) however I cannot locate the sensor switch any help/ advice will be most welcome.

Post up your VIN so I can see exactly what system you have. (VIN will be automatically masked from public view on submission, except to staff). This can also be down to a failing battery, either as a consequence of an aged battery, or if the alternator belt is slipping and not charging properly / or general charging issues, so don't rule that out.

Ok, so with your VIN - ignore all that I said earlier as you have a mechanical falling out pump and only the petrol engines have a power steering pressure switch, which is probably why you can't find it.

Check the levels and that you have bled it properly:
pic steering A.PNG
Fill the power steering reservoir to the mark ( C) on the filler cap (4).
Engine stopped: Slowly move the steering, from lock to lock, in both directions (about 10 times).
Fill the power steering reservoir to the mark ( C) on the filler cap (4).

Bleeding
Turn on the engine and let it idle for 2 to 3 minutes, without moving the steering wheel.
Keep the fluid level topped up.
Bleed the circuit by turning the steering several times in each direction.
Keep the fluid level topped up.

Level
pic steering B.PNG
(H): Maximum level (engine warm).
(C): Maximum level (engine cold).
(ADD): Level minimum.
The oil level must be checked/topped up with the engine off.

All the steering pressure switch is for is to detect when you are on full lock to put the idle speed up a little to stop it stalling.
If it had failed all you would probably notice is a tendency for the engine to stall on full lock. I don't think I've ever known one to fail apart from leaking.
Is this the model with the reservoir on top of the pump?
Does the steering get a bit lighter if you hold the revs on a bit? If this is the case then its probably the sign of a weak pump. The ones with the reservoir on the pump were well known for it.
