The episode on the London Electric Vehicle Company in Coventry Building the Electric cab also uses gluing, not a welder in the entire programme. Have to say it is probably underappreciated the tremendous engineering and precision which goes into building a modern car.

I did post up some time ago a fascinating documentary of how they used to do it building a Peugeot quite a contrast, but equally impressive in its own way with lots of forging, casting, grinding heat and noise, but the whole car made in the same place and very little component sourcing from outside.

....This was my original post......About the Building of a Peugeot 403 at the Peugeot factory in Sochaux in 1954

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 28 Apr 2019, 22:39 Yes, your thread title Steve allows this to be bang on topic, and a revival from the archives.

Now only the most determined will be able to watch the whole lot of this, and overcome the narration which is totally in French, so the link just jumps to a point in the film where there is a bit of molten metal, and casting of cylinder blocks, all in the same factory, not arriving sanitised and "just in time" from half the globe away!

Yes this is how the french used to do it at "L'USINE PEUGEOT DE SOCHAUX EN 1954"
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 02 May 2017, 11:33 This film makes you appreciate just what it takes to construct a car. I can't imaging Nissan at Sunderland or Tesla in the US having an on-site foundry, with molten metal all over the place. I liked the forging of the con rods, and the casting of the engine blocks, with the team of workers with the minimal protective clothing, with a nice touch being the "Skimmer" pushing back the crud as his workmate poured the metal into the mould.

This is the bit of the film I mean, if you haven't watched the entire film. Berets seemed compulsory when dealing with hot metal!

and the end product this the Peugeot 403

BBC Breakfast has just had an article on "The Staycation Express", the first regular tourist train in the UK. It runs from Settle to Carlisle, taking in the magnificent views, and crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Fireball XL5's iconic episode "The Forbidden Planet" featuring an early "transporter" some time before "beam me up Scotty" was born.

Pirelli need to have a look at their tyres! Several punctures in the last couple of laps of the Grand Prix, almost all of them being front left, including Lewis Hamilton on the last lap (and he made it over the line in first place and a shower of sparks!).

Made it an exciting finish though!! Don't forget they all pitted under the safety car for hard tyres without which they would probably have run another 5 or 6 laps before pitting and the hards would have made it home just!!

I've seen some ads lately for a class action against Mercedes over their emissions misinformation to customers and exaggerated claims from 2006 or 20088 onwards I think.

I thought the claims were exceptionally good - that explains it. I can still get 70 mpg from my C5 though - as long as its me driving it :-D

Currently watching "Guy Martin: The Worlds Fastest Tractor" (on Channel 4). Ye Gods! He has just driven the most powerful machine he has ever sat in, a racing tractor. TWO Rolls Royce Merlin engines, developing (between them) 8,000HP!!! On his first go (pulling a trailer with a moving weight that (as the weight gets closer to the front) pushes a bulldozer blade into the soil) he travelled 100 meters, just one meter short of the run set (in the same tractor, Snoopy 4) by the professional driver who owns the tractor.

Granted limited interest, no sound, 25 minutes long, but I found plenty of interest in this film....by Quentin Wilson....er there must be 2 or this was filmed in 1963 by a very proficient 6 year old. It does tell a story. The Denny Shipyard of Dumbarton who built the original Cutty Sark, took on hovercraft in the early 1960's which may have contributed to its subsequent liquidation.
Film link here

"An amateur record of hovercraft production at Denny Hovercraft Ltd. at William Denny & Bros. Leven shipyard, Dumbarton. Focussing mainly on the Denny D2 hoverbus, it details the maiden voyage sailing from Dumbarton to Oban, to Inverness, and down the east coast to the River Thames, London where it is seen operating sightseeing tours. The last section of the film concerns the liquidation of William Denny & Bros. Ltd.
On its journey south it called at Inverness/Frazerburgh/Aberdeen/Berwick Upon Tweed/Whitby/Hull/ Great Yarmouth/ Harwich/London

On Countryfile this evening (BBC1) there is talk about going back to the Cornish Tin Mines, as they have lithium down there, which is what we need for the batteries.

I wonder if the Tuscan Grand Prix is going to make it half way, let alone to the end! OK, I am watching on C4, but less than 10 laps gone and a 'diminished' field.
