Don't spend any more time on my door issue Marc! My new technique has trumped us again!! I went out this morning, reversed the car onto the drive and checked the lock. All exactly as I described yesterday. So I spent 20 minutes repairing the power supply for my old laptop, booted it up and ran the diagbox. All ready to go I went out to unlock the passenger door with the key and found it was unlocked. I locked the car with the remote, all doors locked, I unlocked with the remote and all doors unlocked!!! I must have scared it with the appearance of the lexia on the bench. Needless to say I put it through a robust test program and it performed faultlessly!! So I lubed the locking mechanism just to be sure and put the lexia away. At least I have repaired the laptop power supply!! :? :? :? :-D

The screen issue has occurred again this morning on my 30 mile journey home from Elstree. It may be my fault as I removed my spare head unit from the boot to keep it safe indoors yesterday!! However it does seem logical that I will have to swap it out this time and code it. Am I right in thinking that I should be able to do that with my lexia? :)

Yes Lexia can code to the vehicle Mick. You'll need to do this each time you change the unit over or you will have interrupted / lack of functionality.

Thanks Marc, I assume I have to tell the car a code from the radio. Do you know what the code format will look like on the radio? :)

Hi Mick - IIRC you have one of the early Carlos Fandango VDO units....

In this case it should simply be your 17 alphanumeric VIN code.

Look for a 'Manual Configuration' Menu. Once you locate that, syou should see the following three sections:
  • Radio configuration
  • Lighting table
  • VIN code
Obviously select the last one and fire away

I finally got round to swapping out the RD3 unit this morning, having fitted the replacement door trim yesterday, I thought I'd clear up the potential screen issue before the Stroll begins on Sunday week! All went exactly to plan and even the lexia behaved itself and all I have to say is I now have many more FM stations than I did have and 198 LW is working again!! I just wish I had done it earlier and then been able to listen to TMS when the games were on!!! :-D

There’s something “not right” about listening to TMS over internet radio or on digital. It doesn’t sound authentic without all the weird LW noises, crackles, fade in and out and so on!

Agreed there Michel, it definitely seems more real on LW :-D

Well with just 10 days to go before the Stroll the screen went blank again on the way to lunch today!! It came back after lunch but failed after another 15 minutes driving. I also lost the steering column control of the radio, and the radio remained on when I got home and turned off the engine. Having replaced the head unit I had a quick look on ebay for a screen and found three listed one of which was only £25 so it is on its way here in case. However the issue does seem more of a control issue to me and having replaced the head unit, it would seem ecu type fail. So what I need to know is which other components are involved in screen and column controls? :(

The replacement screen turned up so I went to swap it and discovered I've got the wrong one. That explains the cheap price, £25, but its no use to me. I will put it on the for sale forum in case its any use to anyone else!! So having taken my screen out and got the part number, 9638879480, I went back to ebay and found one at £90. That is too rich for me until I prove that the screen is my issue so I vacuumed the original and I have refitted it to see how it goes. In the meantime if anyone could confirm whether there are any other components that may cause the screen blanking and simultaneous loss of steering wheel controls please let me know! :? :)

If you are talking about the 7in colour MFD, it is likely you will need to replace the screen driver ECU (not the screen itself) VDO 22SY451. Details below. Failure modes include: yellowing, blue lines/flashes, reduced contrast and brightness, lines, intermittent operation, going blank periodically and then permanently. They are prone to temperature fluctuations. If you are (really) lucky, the inbuilt cooling fan may just need cleaning. There are a couple of 2nd hand units on Ebay, but they are not cheap.

Multi Function Display ECU
Fitted to Citroen C5 or Peugeot 604 2001-03 with 7” colour screen satnav
VDO 22SY451/35 (fitted to Citroen C5)
or VDO 22SY451/65 (identical unit fitted to Peugot 604)
See other ref numbers on photo2.

NOTE: this is not the MFD screen itself, nor the satnav cd drive unit, but the ECU for the screen.

Thanks for that input and :welc: to the forum. I see you have the same car as me which may prove useful in the future. I have had a look on ebay but I cannot find the right ECU at the moment. Do you know if I can access it through Lexia and check the cooling fan's operation from there? :)

Search Ebay for for "22SY451" . There are 4. The cheapest at £150 is not a bad price. I don't know about Lexia; I've ran my C5 for 19 years without one. However, I very much doubt that any vehicle diagnostics would "look inside" the ECU.

I have often thought of getting a Lexia but have read that the unofficial copies often do not work on the earliest C5. How did you get yours and how are you getting on with it? However, it may be too late for me now. As the years roll on I find parts less available. Many Citroen C5 parts are now "NFP" (no further production); there are less after market spares; and any scrapped vehicles are equally very old!!

I have come across from the www.Citroen-Owners-Club.co.uk forum, which is very similar in layout. There is a forum for each Citroen type and 20 years of knowledge on the C5. However, the website is unavailable and I am told it may not be recovered at all, in which case all that database knowledge would be lost. I have not explored this forum yet, but it would help if every one put their car make and type in the title, or provide sub-forums for each type!! "French" is a bit broad.

Did I read you had problems with the multi-CD changer? The changer is a standard electro-mechanical device with lots of levers and springs. Over the years the grease dries out and slows or jams the mechanisms. A partial dismantle, degrease and re-grease is easily done.
