2010 1.6hdi 3008 additive level too low help needed

Post by koikidder »

Hi all i have another problem with the 3008 driving home and got a warning message saying particle filter additive level too low repair needed?

I have got one of those ebay scantool boxes with software WOW so i plugged it in to see if it does resetting of the additive system to see if i could do the job my self any way i went through the procedure and it said successfully reset additive level however when i turned off then back on the ignition the warning message reappeared? are you only able to reset the value once the tank or bag is replaced i am unsure how the car calculates the fluid level to know when it is full or empty.

I strongly advise against resetting the additive counter without actually adding anything in for several reasons.

1) The additive tank fluid is not physically measured. It is calculated from initial amount filled at the factory, plus recorded mileage and how much has been injected into the tank.
2) You risk damaging the additive system if you reset it without filling it, as the pump will continue metering out additive if it thinks it has been topped up and when there is no additive left. You will then have a much bigger expense on your hand in replacing that.
3) You are supposed to add a minimum quantity of additive before resetting the system (about 1.1 litres) IIRC and this can also have an adverse affect on the counter / metering system if you have not done this.

I therefore suggest you actually get it topped up ASAP!

Yes, you have a reservoir on this vehicle.

The tanks are gravity-filled, so stick it back and use the kit to fill it. Don't be getting any of the additive on your skin - and keep it well away from sources of ignition.

Thanks Marc, do you know if the reset only works once the tank has been refilled as i have reset the counter however it has not removed the warning on the dash so i am unsure whether or not the car knows how full the tank is or whether my scan tool even though it says reset successful may not be resetting the values on the tank?

It'a hard to say as I can't comment on third party diagnostic tools, as many of these may lack the ability to reset the systems correctly - the additive systems can vary depending on engine ECU and systems fitted to the vehicle. Software can also be updated, which would require the diagnostic tool to be able to communicate with the engine ECU where a separate additive ECU is not fitted (mostly on older vehicles).

So I would get t he tank filled, then try and reset the additive counter again and if this fails, you may have to take it to somebody with a Lexia kit with Diagbox to do or failing that ask a dealer what they will charge to reset the additive counter - they may charge you 30 mins of diagnostic time if it's for a specific function you want doing.

Yes, I would give ECP a wide berth personally. Just make sure it is Powerflex additive (or equivalent).

well i got a 1ltr of additive and filling kit of ebay filled it up refitted then tried to reset the additive tank with delphi and wow and both was unsuccessful at removing the light so i have bought the launch x431 and been assured by the seller that it will sort out the warning message, so i am currently waiting for the scan tool to hopefully reset the additive pump or the values for the tank and hopefully this will fix the warning message.

Just a quick update the launch x431 did it straight away the amount of live data and active test you can do on it is amazing i reset the system and did an active test on the additive pump one to make sure it works and another to make sure the correct amount of fluid is getting pumped into the fuel all come back successful, however a was looking at the exhaust live data and the life span on the dpf is 400 miles it is 100% full of ash so i am expecting another fault code soon but i think i will try removing the dpf giving it a clean then telling the car it has had a new one fitted i will also watch the dpf pressure sensors just to make sure the pressures do not exceed the allowable limit.

Don't get the readings confused - the soot loading is at the time of the reading  . When the next regeneration takes place, that will go back to 0%. This is normal as the soot loading varies whenever the diagnostic takes a reading and depending on how long the engine has been running since the last regeneration.

You will get plenty of warning when the DPF starts to get blocked - accompanied by a 'Particle Filter: Risk of Clogging" message.

I will get a video of the live data and add it to the post you could have a look see what you think, I though that the soot is what can be burnt off during a regeneration but the Ash content cannot be burnt off, the scan tool says a replacement dpf is needed in 400 miles anyways i will get a video put up and also i am having ago at making a little how to video so hopefully I may help some one out in the future it was a simple DIY job if you have a scan tool just was a bit daunting at first so hopefully the video may help someone else.

I refilled mine and got a kind member with a working Lexia to reset the warning light, that was about a year ago and it's never come on again.
