'MyWay' sat nav on 2009 C5 repeatedly reboots.

This unit is the MyWay system, also referred to as RNEG, made by Harman Becker.
Main Features: Also referred to as RNEG, the MyWay colour satellite navigation system, has SD card, integrated European mapping, live trafic information, voice guidance and graphics in 2D or aerial perspective & it features a Bluetooth® system (Bluetooth phone compatibility only - no Bluetooth Audio Streaming).

'MyWay' sat nav on 2009 C5 repeatedly reboots.

Post by Bob L'eponge »

Hi all,

I am having problems with the 'MyWay' sat nav / entertainment system on my November 2009 1.5 Hdi C5 Tourer.

At seemingly random times, which are becoming more frequent (as much as 3 times an hour) the multifunction screen will go blank, then the system will reboot. Destinations that have been stored in the system can usually then be re-selected, but this is obviously not very convenient if the system cuts out 400m before a complex motorway junction! Yesterday when the system cut out it took all of the stored destinations with it, along with the stored radio information, date and time and display settings.

I have tried a factory reset and a different SD card in case the card was causing read errors, but this has not helped. Until it cuts out the system and screen works perfectly.

Anyone any ideas what might be going on here, or can even give me an outline of how the system actually works? Is the screen just a display with the computer-type stuff being contained in another component? (Such as the unit that has the function selection buttons and SD card reader.)

As far as I can make out the destination information is held in some sort of temporary memory and is then written to somewhere else when the car is turned off for a few minutes - if a new destination is entered and the system reboots, that information will be lost, but it seems to remain available if the car has been stopped and turned off for a while before the system crashes.

Could it be as simple as a loose connection, or do such problems usually indicate the the multi-function screen is on its way out? This has been going on for over a year now with the system still working properly - apart from the rebooting problem of course.

Thanks!

mine did that bob.. it doesn't now.. I have changed the battery (which caused many gremlins it seems)

the cooling fan for the HD? in that area of car often was on during the reboots it seemed ..noticeable after turning engine off. I don't actually know why mine works now except for replacing the battery ..sorry..

other errors fixed including many warnings coming up frequently (parking brake/gearbox/suspension/etc)

This system doesn't have a Hard Drive - it does use a flash memory card internal to the system. There are several possibilities I can think of:

1) the system is overheating and causing the restarts (check this by trying first thing in the morning when the unit has cooled - does it immediately start the restarting cycle - or only when it has been in operation for some time?
2) The internal Storage Card is / has become corrupt and is causing the restarts. Like all flash storage technology, they have a finite number of read / writes. The card will of been operating nearly 9 years now, so may be exhibiting symptoms of failure.
3) The above may be resolved by re-applying the firmware from the firmware CD (I would not try restoring from an SD card when the system is like this).

Can I ask if you have recently paired a new phone to the unit via Bluetooth (or has the phone's software been updated recently)? Some new phones can cause problems with the units. A firmware update may fix this. Or, you can try unpairing the bluetooth phone and removing the phone. See if that makes any difference to the system and if it still reboots, you can rule that out.

If that fails I suspect it will be the internal storage card or ECU that is the cause.

Diagbox can link to the RNEG / MyWay ECU and read off any faults that may be logged (the fault log in the MyWay system relates to any detected car faults not MyWay faults).

Thanks for the replies.

GiveMeABreak:

No changes regarding phones - I hate mobiles but do have an old android that has been paired to the MyWay system for years. I'll try deleting it.

I don't think it is an overheating problem as the reboot thing can occur just after setting off, and is no more likely to occur even after several hours of driving.

I have never seen or heard of a firmware CD. (I bought the car when it already had 90,000km on it.)

Your thoughts about some sort of read-error fit in well with what I thought might be going on. Thing is, if that is the problem, what bit of the system contains the flash memory and would need to be changed? From what I have heard most of the components are amazingly expensive.

gra1:

I think the battery is in good health. Car stars in seconds every time and I am not getting any of those 'Economy Mode' issues that seem to indicate that a battery is on the way out.

Thanks!

Ok, just wanted to rule out the overheating issues.

All the telematics units have firmware updates available - some provide bug fixes and or improvements and updates to bluetooth profiles. However, this won't fix or cure these sorts of issues as they will be hardware related no doubt.

There is a well-known issue of the EEPROM chips failing with these units at some point and yes, they can be a few quid to have repaired. There are a few places that can effect repairs on these units and I have linked to 2 of them in this post:

https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... it=clarion

Clarion is an authorised repair Centre in the UK and can repair the Harman Becker MyWay units. I'm suggesting about the 350 to 400 Euros mark - but could be less.

Hi All,
I'm jumping back on this older thread as this seems to be a recurring theme with the MyWay unit. Mine has been doing this for years and despite all the non-invasive fixes, it continues to do so. I now drive with a tom tom stuck on the screen because I cannot use the nav system. From all that I have read, there is a faulty Eprom in the unit (which explains the loss of all recent memory settings and routes. Now that these cars (C5 X7) are a bit older, I am starting to look around for units off cars at breakers to see if I can replace my head unit. Are there any guidance notes from anyone who has had replace or removed a head unit?
Thanks

Hi Francis. Replacing the Head Unit is relatively simple - ensuring that the quadlock is removed first before any other connectors (risk of bricking the display) and reconnected last. (ideally the car battery disconnected) first.

The MyWay unit is VIN coded to the vehicle, so you would need Diagbox to recode it to your vehicle's VIN. The ECU configuration should be checked to ensure that the correct settings are enabled for your vehicle, as certain options may be different from the donor vehicle.

These units often fail to a hardware component and / or the internal storage flash memory (as there is no hard disk) becomes corrupt and needs 'reanimating'. This can't be done without specialist software and connection to the unit directly. But this is something that the Clarion Centre can do.

Hi All,
It's a while since I logged on, but wanted to see if anyone out there has ever resolved this RNEG reboot issue. I sought to go through the Clarion Centre, as recommended by Marc, but they won't take business direct and needed me to go through the dealer (yeah, right!) The old C5 X7 is now on 186000 miles, and spending that kind of cash on it makes no sense whatsoever. I see a few RNEG systems for sale on ebay etc, but most of these are >£300 and who knows if they will work when installed.

My understanding from reading around is that the issue most likely lies with a faulty EEPROM, so I go to wondering if anyone could confirm this and if there was any DIY way to get at this component and duplicate it's program onto a fresh (hopefully non-faulty) chip.

Thanks all
Francis

The last 7 posts from this thread have been removed to clean this thread up, as they have nothing specifically to do with the MyWay system.

Hi,

Has anyone found a practical solution to this issue. I have an RNEG unit too and it is restarting all of the time at the moment. It seems more aggressive in cold weather, but seems to behave once the car cabin has warmed up.

Any help appreciated! TIA

See this post, it's likely to need a new SD card.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for this. The simple things to try first isn’t it lol. Fingers crossed it works for me.
